Question about comic book covers

What's up with these comic book covers that are thicker than regular paper? The price of these comics are always more expensive than regular books.

Why do they do this? Just to make it look more prestigious so that they can charge customers more money? Or these stories usual "special"? Are they usually one of stories?

Please explain.

If you're referring to "cardstock" covers -- where the covers are printed on a type of thin, stiff paper, then the answer to your question is "yes."

Lately, Marvel has been using these for "special" books like "Origin." It adds a little prestige to them, as well as some extra $$$ to the cover price.

It's really nothing new. Dark Horse was using heavier stock for certain series of their books a decade ago. The first one I remember was "Star Wars Dark Empire." And they also used it on their "Grendel Tales" and "Sin City" books as well.

You can usually expect the paper stock (the pages inside the cover) to be of a better quality whenever you see a cardstock cover. They are usually coated stocks (whiter and shinier).

I caught a peek at this week's Justice League send-up (by Giffen, deMatteis, Maguire) and it had this type of cover, but the interior page quality wasn't so slick, bordering on enhanced newsprint, but not what I like seeing in comics nowadays since it gives off a greyish hue to the coloring. It does seem that DC is getting into the new stiffer cover stock.

IIRC, the Marvel Ultimate titles all have the stiffer cover stock as well.

Not anymore; awhile back they switched to thin, slick/glossy covers.
