It was a four issue miniseries from the 90s, fully painted and I believe written by Alex Ross. It depicts the Marvel Universe from the eyes of a "normal" person... I really liked it

That's a nice synopsis. It's been a year or so since I read the mini-series but I'm pretty sure each issue focuses on different denizens of the Marvel universe. One looks at the X-Men, another at Spidey and another at the Fantastic Four. I'm thinking the other looks at the Avengers but I'm not certain. The art is really superb, as is the story. I haven't seen Spiderman but I was struck, when watching the trailers, that a few shots were very similar to some of the art from the Spidey Marvels installment.

BTW, there's another mini-series, called Ruins, that's the flip-side of Marvels, where nothing quite happened like they did in the Marvel timeline and some things went horribly wrong. It actually uses the same "normal" person from Marvels to look at the world through. It's written by Warren Ellis and is totally fascinating IMO, though it is extremely dark. The original comics from the series are a bit tough to find but the compilation is fairly common I believe.

Did I read somewhere that there's a sequel coming out? And is this "Ruins" still available?

I'd like to buy some more graphic novels like this but have I idea where to look online. Any tips?

tks

i don't think that ruins was ever collected. i believe that your only option is finding the individual issues which are kinda pricey. that is a really good read, that IMHO should have been 4 issues instead of just 2.

marvels was the original marvel universe told through the eyes of a daily bugle photographer named phil sheldon. this was the book that made alex ross a superstar. he then followed it up with "kingdom come" which was a possible future for the the dc heroes, which was also very good. if you haven't picked up marvels, i would suggest picking up the soon to be released 10th anniversary hardcover. you won't be sorry.

I believe the series was written by Mark Waid. I will have to look at my issues to be sure. Pick it up, I really enjoyed it.

One of my favorite images from "MARVELS" is when the X-Men are being cornered by a mob of people and Cyclops, with his lens glowing bright red, backs into the darkness and tells the rest "they're not worth it"... all you can see is his lens glowing in the dark....

The other is Galactus standing over the city.

Actually, it was written by Kurt Busiek

Here's a link to the 10th Anniversary Hardcover edition at Amazon. Amazon has it at 30% off cover price. It's supposed to ship soon, I think.

Ruins was just terrible, one of those awful late 1990s comics that were dark just for the sake of being dark (Jean Grey being a prostitute in this oh so daring 'dark future' was one of the things that sticks in my mind).

You can't go wrong with Marvels though, great book. Kingdom Come with the DC heroes in the future also has art by Ross and was written by Mark Waid.

Yeah, Ross only painted it. Also did Kingdom Come, another great painted series set in the DC universe, although I think Ross has one of the biggest inflated egos Ive ever read.
