This Week's Comics (2/28-3/6)

HUGE week for me. I hope this doesn't become a pattern for me....one huge week followed by 3 weeks without almost nothing.

Tomorrow Stories #12 - The Good: Jack B. Quick returns! The Bad: Cobweb's still around

Tom Strong #16 - Just gotta draw some attention to Chris Srouse, one of the most underrated artists in comics today.

The Ultimates #2 - Still not sure how I felt about the first issue, but I'll stick with this title for a while and see where it goes.

Daredevil #30 - I know that I'm in the minority here, but I still haven't been very impressed with Bendis's first storyline. The death/fall of the Kingpin storyline has been done way too many times already, and all these flashbacks are giving me whiplash. Great art, though.

Captian America: Dead Men Running #2 - I didn't read the first issue yet, but I picked up that one, too.

Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #13 - If anyone has become interested in Ted McKeever's art through this story, I highly recommend picking up the TPB (I believe that only one volume has been released) of "Metropol"...a great pre-Vertigo "Vertigo" book that has never gotten it's due respect.

Hellblazer #171 - After a great start, Azzarello has been slipping on this title. Let's hope that he starts pulling it together and goes out on a high note.

100 Bullets #33 - I really hope that the main character survives this story arc. I would love to have a "Counterfifth Detective" monthly or miniseries by Azzarello. This may be the best "100 Bullets" story to date.

Green Arrow #12 - I don't think that I need say any more than.....HAWKMAN!!!!!!

The Flash #183 - Normally, the very idea of "The Trickster" (even a revamped one) would make me roll my eyes. It's a credit to Geoff John's superb run on this title that I'm actually intrigued by the idea.

Also, in an attempt to bankrupt me, new DC Direct and Simpsons figures were released on the same day. I picked up the DC Direct releases of Shazam and Black Adam (I also have a Captain Cold figure on order), as well as Fat Tony and Troy McClure from the Simpsons line.

Wasn't anything I wanted this week aside from the newest Hellboy TPB (Conquerer Worm). Missed #2 in the store and nobody was able to reorder it. Course the tpb does include a new epilogue. I did pick up the Kingdom Come TPB though -- been wanting that one for awhile.

Huge week for me also. I picked up. . .

Cage #1 - Cage just kicks a$$. I've been looking forward to this book since I first heard about it. Corbon was born to draw Luke Cage. And while the plot is very cliched, Azzarello's inner monologue of Cage is so entertaining it more that makes up for the so far trite plot.

Midnight Nation #10 - I forgot this book existed. I decent read but this book just got to boring for me & the 4 months in between each issue just makes me not care about what happened.

The Legion #5 - haven't read it yet but this is one of the best team books I have ever read.

Ruse #5 - An awesome book. Guice is by far doing the best work of his career.

The Ultimates #2 - I also wasn't hooked after the first issue but after reading this I am on this title till the end. More than any other comic out there, this book is like reading a large scale movie. I can't wait to see what Millar does with the Skrulls.

100 Bullets #33 - Milo is definitely one fo the best character to come out of this title. however, despite this being one of the best comics I have ever read, I think with this issue I am dropping the title. Although the waiting is horrible, I just don't think this comic works well as a monthly format. I enjoy reading the stories in whole, as the trades come out better.

The Order #1 - Haven't read it yet but I think this book will suck. I am such a big fan of Strange & Surfer I had to give it a shot though.

Captain America : Dead Men Running #2 - Gamblor, post what you think. This is really my first exposure to Cap, I never read his book before but I like it a lot & it has me really looking forward to the new series. I like the art on this also.

Daredevil #30 - I love what Bendis has done with this book. Maleev is becoming one of my favorite artists & his work on this has been incredible.

Captain Marvel #29 - One of the most underrated comics being published.

Ultimate X-men #15 - Figured I'd give this book one more try with the new story arc before I drop it.

Wolverine #173 - Call me lame, but I still love this book.

The Path: Prequel - Haven't read it yet. Not a big crossgen fan at all, but the cover caught my eye so I figure since it's the beginning I'd give it shot.

Green Arrow #12 - Also have not read it yet.

Also got the new Previews & Wizard(some good toilet reading

Trades:

Essential Doctor Strange - I don't really like the Essential format. I much prefer D.C.'s Archives. But Dr. Strange rules! A must have for me. Don't know when I will get a chance to read it though.

I also picked up the Simpsons Celebrity voices series 1 figures. Got all 3, Herb Powel, Fat Tony, & Troy Mclure(may be my favorite figure released so far). These Simpson figures are so addictive, plus how could you not want a toy with the voice of Phil Hartman

Well, I was hoping to get some titles read over the weekend so that I would have something more substantial to say, but there was WAY too many titles this week plus I went insane picking up trades *sigh*.

Ugh, I hate making this look like it's only my shopping list:

Singles
100 Bullets #33
Catwoman #4: I’ve been enjoying this title – it has a very 1950’s “retro” look and feel to it. The Catwoman is this title isn’t the usual slinky, sexy version, and is more of a daredevil (who wears thick boots! )
Green Arrow #12
JLA #63
Legion #5
Promothea #19
Taleweaver #6
Tom Strong #16
Tommorrow Stories #12
Ruse #5: One of my favorite Crossgen titles. If you’re curious, check out http://www.comicsontheweb.com/ where you can read issues #1-3 of Ruse (as well as a variety of other Crossgen titles).
Agency #6
Midnight Nation #10
Cage #1
Captain America: Dead Man Running #2: The art style started to grow on me in this issue, and started to get into the story more. The story still seems like another self-contained Captain America story and I’m not sure how it’ll transition to the “new” Captain America coming soon.
Daredevil #30
Howard the Duck #2: I want to check out the Essential Howard the Duck first before starting on this MAX mini-series.
Incredible Hulk: The Monster Returns & Incredible Hulk #37 : The Monster Returns compiles issues #34-36 of the new Incredible Hulk storyline. I picked it – and issue #37 - up from Sessa17’s suggestion, and I gotta say that it’s an interesting title. It has a bit of the wandering aspect from the TV show, and the conspiracy issue seems pretty interesting.
New X-Men #123: I like the art in this issue by…I think Scriver? (don’t have the issue on me at the moment). Otherwise, I’ve been enjoying this title a lot, but it’s been very Jean Grey/Emma Frost centric (albeit, the dynamic between the two is great).
Spider Man: Tangled Web #11
Ultimate Team-Up #13
Ultimate X-Men #15
Ultimates #2: I’m liking this title a lot. I’ve been an Avengers fan for a long time and this remake of them is an interesting take on the classic characters (esp. since I also got Essential Avengers recently, and it’s interesting reading the group’s “origin” almost side by side).
Oh My Goddess PtXI #7
Super Manga Blast #19
Futaba-kun Change v.8 #7

Trades:
Starman v.1 Sins of the Father
Starman v.7 A Starry Knight
Lone Wolf & Cub v.18
Livin' La Vida Dorka
Strangers in Paradise v.2: I Dream of You: I’m picking up one volume of this title per week.
Whiteout: Melt: Almost done with volume one and wanted to pick this up before I was done
Essential Avengers v.1
Essential Howard the Duck

Gamblor: Hey, no question of the week?

Just throwing this out: Did any of you watch “Welcome to Eltingville” and what did you think of it?

I did have a few ideas for question of the week, but I never get around to posting them. I always work a bit late on Thursdays, so I'm usually exhausted when I start these threads. I always mean to come back and add them, but I'm just too damn lazy. (Hell, I haven't even gotten around to reading "Harlequin Valentine" yet.)

Just throwing this out: Did any of you watch “Welcome to Eltingville” and what did you think of it?
Would this be based on Evan Dorkin's Eltingville characters???? When is it on and what channel??? I'd love to see this!!! They're usually my favorite strip in "Dork".

Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #13 - A mediocre ending to a mediocre story. Still love McKeever's art, though.

Daredevil #30 - About 2 issues worth of real story so far stretched out into 4 or 5 issues. Get on with it, Bendis!

Ultimates #2 - Hmmmm...it has possibilities.

Tomorrow Stories #12 - A fine issue. I even liked Cobweb in this one. (Of course, it helps that she was teamed up with Greyshirt.) The Starsky and Hutch porn references in the First American story have me a bit concerned about Alan Moore's state of mind.

Tom Strong #16 - Best issue in quite a while. I like these multi-issue stories better.

Hellblazer #171 - Better than the last couple of issues, but not quite as good as I have come to expect from Azzarello's run on this title.

Captain America: Dead Men Running # 1 and 2 - I've never been a big Cap fan, but I'm very impressed with this miniseries so far. Fine writing, and I love the art work. I believe this is the same team that produced the recent Corinthian miniseries for Vertigo. (It's definitely the same artist.) They work very well together. This is a team to watch!

I haven't read the rest of them yet, but I'll post my comments after I do.

I finally cleared some room and took all my figures and playsets out of the boxes the other day. I was feeling bad about wasting my money on them until I pressed the buttons and got to hear Troy McClure and Fat Tony. I've stopped buying the playsets because $20 is just too much, but I may have to break down and buy the Krusty Burger one becasue it's the only place you can get the Pimply Faced Teen figure.

To further injure my wallet, I also picked up most of the new series of the McFarlane hockey figures. Incredible detail on these things, but I'll probably stop after this set. I'm spending way too much money on toys lately.

I've never read Dork before, but yup, it's based on Evan Dorkin's characters.

It was on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim last night from 11PM-11:30PM. Title is "Welcome to Eltingville", and there's only the pilot episode currently. I have no idea when they will (or if) show it again.

100 Bullets #33 The best story arc so far. This has become my favorite title. I was glad to hear DC signed Azzarello for two years. Hopefully he won't be going anywhere.

Ultimates #2 Title seems to familiar for my tastes. Was hoping for more.

Midnight Nation #10 Truth is I only pick this up because I love Gary Frank's art.

Green Arrow #12 I've enjoyed this title more than I thought I would when Smith was announced as its writer.

Yeah me too. Actually I didn't like this book at the beginning but the latter issues of Smith's run has just been fun. I actually think where very little happens, this issue is my favorite issue so far. There is just something I enjoy about seeing these superheros just talk, & Smith may be one of the very best & writing just that.

Some quick thoughts on the rest of my books for the week I just read. . .

Daredevil #30 - This is the first issue where i know understand Gamblor's gripes with Bendis's run. He is just taking to long to build things up without anything happening. He is making this book more of a organized crime book then a superhero book, expecially with this issue. And with the constant cut scenes he is just repeating over the same territory.

The Order #1 - I was right, this book was unbearable. This title has to many problems to even go into detail. When the HELL does this take place in continuity. The dialogue is unbelievable cheesy. And any team with the Hulk & Silver Surfer & Strange with his ability to teleport is just to damn powerful to be involved with plotlines like this.

Ultimate X-men #15 - With this issue I drop this title. The art is nice, but it's just a lame read. With the Authority & now Ultimates & get the feeling through Millar's writing he is trying to push the characters & plot as far as he can push them to achieve something. In this book he is just repeating the exact same thing the X-men movie, Claremont, & many before him have done before. there is absolutely nothing new here, just the exact same X-men characters with really bad foreshadowing.

The Path: Prequel - I don't know why but I want to not like crossgen books. But like the Sojourn prequel & the first issue of Ruse the first look at the world of the Path has me intrigued.

100 Bullets #33 - So I say I want to drop this book to just read it in trades but after reading this how could I. Could this book actually get any better. After Cole Burns, Milo has now become my favorite character in this seris & I'm just dying to know(at least I think I know how) his connection into the big picture that is slowly forming.

Gamblor I was the same way with the Simpson figures, I had them all boxed up & was actually getting every singel one, up untill series 6 I had everybody plus all the enviorments & every single exclusive except for Radioactive Homer(which I doubt I will ever get). I still get all the exclusives(just got my pin-pal Moe in the mail yesterday), but now I only buy the characters I like & I have also opened them all up.

The voices are just to awesome to not open these figures up & what's even better is now that I opened up all the enviorments, in my basement I hooked them all up together & it's too funny, it really is the entire town of Springfield.

Week's TPBs

Slightly late this week, so I'm going to give capsule reviews of three lackluster reads:

Peter Parker: A Day in the Life

Hearing lots of praise about the current writing talent on all of the Spider-Man books, but Paul Jenkins' writing is a bit tepid. The book seems to be trying too hard to illicit an emotional response and winds up feeling flat.

Lone Wolf and Cub: The Assassin's Road

Typical manga. If you like that sort of thing, you'll like this. I want to like manga, but I'm always disappointed. For those looking to dismiss my opinion: I turned off Akira about an hour in and never looked back.

Animal Man

Specifically, this is a collection of the earliest issues in Grant Morrison's run. I've heard the later stories are brilliant, but you'd never know it with this volume. Worth reading the coyote story, though.
