What Are You Reading 2025 - Electric Bookaloo
Just finished Come Closer by Sara Gran a nifty quick demonic possession read. Recommended.

Will be starting Moby Dick to start the new year.
Read on, MacDuffs!

The Man with the Golden Gun by Ian Fleming. This is a bad book.
Bond is assigned to kill Scaramanga, a hit man. Bond goes to Jamaica. He reads the newspaper at the airport, and notices a house for sale. He pokes through the airport's mail slots, and sees a letter addressed to Scaramanga. The letter tells Scaramanga to go to the same house for sale. Bond goes there. Scaramanga and Bond swap insults, and Scaramanga hires Bond. Scaramanga also hires CIA agents. Scaramanga talks with a KGB agent about increasing the size of marijuana shipments to the US from ten pounds to a hundred pounds. (Scary music.) Bond waits until Scaramanga has shot him twice before killing him. Bond's life is saved by the CIA agent.
Does that make any sense? It was bad enough that I looked it up on Wikipedia. It's a first draft that was published after Fleming's death.
I can see why the movie scriptwriters ignored everything in the book.

Gotta love Hoopla.
I checked out the Revival Compendium -- it has all the issues 1-47. I'm on issue 12 and it's awesome. I think I have the single issued but maybe just issues 1-5 or so. Never kept track of it. I'm surprised it hasn't been adapted into a series yet.

I’ve been on something of an Elmore Leonard kick. Just finished Bandits. I was hoping to finish it before the end of the year to add to my Goodreads Reading Challenge but I got sidetracked. Oh well, it’ll go towards my 2025 challenge.

It was fun yet felt somewhat dated to the 80s. I enjoy Leonard’s writing style enough to not be bothered by it though.

The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, 20th anniversary edition.
I saw the movie years ago, but this is the first time I read the book. It's a graphic novel, an autobiography about growing up in a theocracy. It's great.

Re: What Are You Reading 2025 - Electric Bookaloo

Finished this last night. Wasn't what I expected, but found it to be an enjoyable, well-written story. About halfway through I got curious and checked to see if it was classified as "young adult", which it isn't, from what I found. Felt like it to me though. Not a knock, but I was expecting a more "mature" story (if that makes sense). But I liked it.

I didn't get it onto last year's list, but I finished this on December 30th:

It's a generally fun anthology of trashy short stories; the only reason that I became aware of it is because a friend of mine had a story selected for it.
Currently reading:

I don't think that I've ever read this, although I've owned it since it first came out. The movie's not my favorite of those based on King's work, so we'll see how much I like this one.

I started The Expanse series the other day with Leviathan Wakes. I recently purchased the first three books as a set. I figure I'll wait until I'm into the third book before deciding on getting the rest.
Anyone here read the whole series? (no spoilers, please)

Second time I've seen that series mentioned today. Might have to check it out myself!

Have you (or anyone) read something else by Rachel Harrison. She's on my radar but what I'm wondering what the best book of hers to start off with would be. Cackle is the most read on Amazon and Goodreads, but a number of them are close.
Loved the tv series and the books sound like they'd be right up my alley. I'm just hesitant to devote a lot of time reading books where I've seen all the seasons of the series recently, which supposedly were pretty faithful to the books. It's true the tv series doesn't cover the last 3 books (or so).
The author recently had a new book come out that's the first in a new series that I'll probably read first. The Mercy of Gods, which I've heard excellent things about.
Still making my way through Tad Williams' The Last King of Osten Ard series. Finished a short novel prequel, The Brothers of the Wind:

Halfway through the 3rd main book of the series, Into the Narrowdark. But it's over 800 pages long so it'll still be awhile.

The Return was my first Rachel Harrison, and I cant say that I loved it. Had some cool moments and ideas, but it felt like would have been a better novella, as it seems like the same scene and conversations are repeated. From what I know about her other books, Im pretty sure she just wont be for me, but I know plenty who really liker her work.

The Striker Portfolio by Adam Hall. Cold war espionage. British-made West German fighter jets are falling out of the sky at a rate of one a week. Secret agent Quiller is told to figure out who's doing it, and how.
The same author wrote The Flight of the Phoenix under another pseudonym.

I'm still plugging away on Book 4 of the Stormlight Archive, Rhythm of War. I'm a slow reader when it comes to fantasy (as I world build in my head). In the same time that I got to page 200, my oldest has already finished his copy. I figure I'll be reading this one for awhile.

Just finished: The Book of Quint by Ryan Dacko.

A lot of this reads like fan fiction but it’s a fun read when the author doesn’t bend over backwards trying to connect the dots with the movie. All-in-all it was fun getting back into a story of Amity and Quint even if the book is a little shaky here and there.
