I picked it up for the same reason - the big buzz. I dig a good thriller, and the premise sounded interesting.
It reads fast, with short, punchy chapters spread across a couple of story arcs.

Kudos to Newman for starting the action up right away, though by the end some elements are really a bit silly. Though to be honest: it held my interest enough to read it in one sitting on a really hot day while I lounged on the couch in the A/C with my dog lying next to me.

The book was what I would call 'dumb fun'. I fully expect to see this on Netflix within the year.

This was my second time to read Fast Times, but it had been over 35 years since I last read it. The movie stuck remarkably close to the novel, but then again, Cameron Crowe wrote the screenplay for the movie.

Over 1500 pages on the Kindle -eek- Despite reading a couple of online summaries of the previous books, it's still taking me some time to get back up to speed with everyone and everything. Supposedly there's only one more book after this to wrap up the big story. And unlike other fantasy authors, Sanderson is good about delivering on what he says. Before this I did read the "Book 3.5" novella:
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...f3b3bd1134.png
Like he did with Edgedancer before Book 3 (Oathbreaker) came out, this is a nice mostly self-contained story set in the Stormlight Archive world that gives previously secondary characters a chance to shine and tells a little more about how the world works.

I actually enjoyed the first one. The second one was pretty bad. Jury still out on this one. I got all 3 for $1 at a garage sale so figured why not.

The coolest thing about this book of short stories was that each short story referenced at least one of the other short stories in the book. By the end of the book, it felt like I had read a novel instead of a book of short stories, yet each story can stand alone as well. The best story in the book, "Sewing for the Heart," is very icky and very good. All of the short stories are dark, but none could really be called horror tales.

Burning Chrome - William Gibson. I haven't read many of the stories in the book since it came out in the 1980s. Now I understand why I didn't like some of them. I liked the stories where the protagonist beat the system, but never re-read the bulk of the stories where the protagonist gets crushed. It's not a happy collection.

Just got a copy of this as well, via my Night Worms monthly subscription package.
Really looking forward to it - next up after I finish what I'm currently reading.

Pretty good first novel from an author who's widely-respected these days. It's another example of what seemed to be a late '70s trope--children covering up the deaths of their parents in order to stay together as a family. Stephen King called it a horror novel, but I'm not so sure that I agree (although there are a couple of horrible things in it).

I bought the novel after seeing the film because I was confused on a couple of plot points, and I hoped that reading the novel would clear them up. As it turns out, the novel is even more confusing than the movie. It's still a fun read.

Finally finished. It was good, but felt like a slog at times (and certainly didn't seem like it needed to be as long as it was).
