https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...2c209c591.jpeg I think I'm just going to have to admit that I dont enjoy reading Colson Whitehead. I recognize his skill, but the way he tells his stories just never grabs me. As soon as I start to get some momentum and engagement with the story, it seems like he diverts to another long backstory or tangent. I appreciate character and world building, but it seems like every person and place has to have their history told, usually at the expense of grinding the pace of the main story to a halt. |
Re: What Are You Reading? 2021
I got that last week and have it in my pile to read. Unfamiliar with the author and bought it off an L.A. Times review. Currently on "Return of the King". Figured it was time I read "The Lord of the Rings". (yes, I read the other two books first -ptth- )

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...b4aeddf871.png My first book by this author (though I saw the movie The Ritual). I'm a sucker for Lovecraftian stories, and I liked the story here (about cultists murdering people and worshiping an ancient god/monster). I don't know if this was Nevill's normal style, but I didn't really care for the way he wrote. All of the purple prose made it a tough read. Sure, that was the style of Lovecraft and it worked there (but I don't find it works so well when modern writers try to do it). |

Die Trying by Lee Child https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...e9f95c4485.jpg This was better than the first Jack Reacher book. I'm looking forward to reading more books in the series. Bill Bryson is one of my favorite writers. I've read nearly everything he's put out short of the book of words or some such thing he put out for technical writing.

I didn't know Grell wrote a Sable novel 21 years ago but just picked it up and am giving it a read on my daily commute. |

I just finished this, which was very mediocre. But the book before this was Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary so this one never had much of a chance.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...089d6bda27.jpg I ended up finishing this in one day. Really fun read, and I enjoyed the way the author wrote it as a true crime novel, despite almost all of it being fiction. |

Still working on this bad-boy. Rick Perlstein remains one of the best political/sociological writers working today (his previous books, especially Nixonland are masterful). Didn't realize this book would devote so much time to the ERA and whatnot, but hey, even as a poli sci major that focused on American politics, I learned a helluva lot, and am still learning as I digest this tome. I'm probably only halfway done, but I'm enjoying every chapter...It's one of those books that I'm always like, okay, just one more chapter, one more chapter then it's bedtime. Next thing I know, it's like 3:00 AM and I'm like, I've gotten get some sleep. It's that addictive. Highly recommended for political junkies... |

Started this a few days ago and am really enjoying it. It's got a lot of biology and scientific stuff I'm not familiar with, but it's written so that I can keep up without feeling lost (or stoopid).

This looks and sounds interesting. A friend bought it and said I could borrow it once he's done...He's a bit of a slow reader so that might be a while but I have other books I can work on...But I am intrigued by the premise of this book...

One of the longest-running active series in the genre and Sandford continues to deliver.
