Harry Potter and the Cursed Child 07/31/16

The script from the West End 2-part play has now officially been released. Any one else pick it it and give it a read?

I'd rate this script-only experience as very mediocre. It's a shame that a) they couldn't make a full book adaptation or b) release this material as it is supposed to be seen in a much larger way than a single stage in London.

I would have been in line at release if this were a book. A play? No thanks.

I thought it was amazing. Same level of quality as the rest of the series. Cared for new characters as much as old ones. Definitely recommend.

Seems kind of dickish to release a play script as the next Harry Potter novel.

Sure, a lot of people would want to read the script, but a ,but will pick up the book thinking it's a new novel.

You'd think Rowling would be rich enough to hire a ghost writer to turn this into a full novel if she didn't want to write it herself.

Re: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child 07/31/16

I was going to buy it but held off and am gonna check it out at the library. I'm #149 of 188 holds of 27 titles and each borrow at the library can be checked out for 21 days so I'm looking at a four month wait, but I can wait. $15 is a bit steep for a Kindle book. I was very surprised the library had a Kindle copy of this, it hadn't occurred to me to check there which was why I was so late to the party.

The book is getting universally slammed on Amazon that the characters don't ring true to life and that she appears to have just stamped her name and handed it off to a ghostwriter. Things like

(and yes, big spoilers)

Spoiler:
Ron getting hammered during his wedding to Hermione, Harry telling his son Albus, who is a loner at school, to stay away from Scorpius, Draco's son and his one friend, just because of who Scorpius is (i.e. Draco's son, not based on his own character), apparently they don't treat Voldie's son well, etc.
and so on.

I was telling my husband about this and he said people change, that just because Harry was a good kid doesn't mean he can't grow up to be a jerk.

Definitely looking forward to reading it but nothing I feel like spending money on.

4th in line, looking at 84 days now or less than 3 months Moving fairly quickly. I wonder if people click "Return Item" if they check it out and finish reading it before the due date (I always do to let the other in line have it). And I wonder how many people know they can set borrowing times, it defaults to 7 days which is never enough for me and you can go into your settings and change it to 21 and I borrowed for years before I found this out.

You can definitely read this in less than 7 days. I read it in 2.

Anyway, I thought it was an OK read. I have to preface this by saying I've never read any Potter book (seen all the movies though). Some of the characters weren't that well developed and seemed cliched. And it does suffer from the "idiot plot" at times.

I want a novel, I don't want a script.

Re: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child 07/31/16

My main problem about the story is that it resorts to
Spoiler:
time travel and uses it in a very uninteresting way. Rowling destroyed the time turners in book 5 for a reason ... they remove stakes in the plot and can lead to very sloppy storytelling if not used correctly. The last thing I wanted from a new Harry Potter story was to revisit previous events.

I started it yesterday and I am LOVING it. Awesome so far. Just over a third in. I'm glad I don't listen to reviews

I really enjoyed it. I don't get the haters, I thought it was perfect, and I was glad to be in that universe again.

Re: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child 07/31/16

I enjoyed it, but I definitely think it's meant to be seen and not read. (I do wonder, however, how in the heck they can pull off some of the effects on a live stage. I can only assume they got some professional magicians to help out with that stuff.)

Spoiler:
I found the ending in which Harry essentially has to let his parents die to be incredibly effective. Honestly, the ongoing theme of parents and children was well done if a bit heavy handed.

I liked it but it's definitely on the light side. I didn't think Harry changed much, just that he was an adult that didn't know how to deal with his son. That's not uncommon.

I just finished this today and overall I didn't love it or hate it. I liked it. I would give it a 3.5/5.
