Though to be fair, I was well warned and prepared for what this was going to be. At least I can move right onto the next book, unlike all you hardcore reading bastards who had to wait 6 years. I have a feeling there's probably a really solid book that can be edited down from "Feast" and "Dance". Ironic that an editor as prolific as GRRM has his own book so crucially in need of one (especially since a number of editing projects were going on while he was writing this).

As I said earlier in this thread, what's there is well-written enough. It's just painfully full of filler. Maybe I'm misremembering the first three books, and they had just as much filler but the shocking plot turns made my mind overlook it? I don't think so. Though what's there of the story is going in some potentially interesting directions:

Spoiler:
I liked seeing Cersei get her long overdue comeuppance, and got a chuckle out of Jamie tossing her "help me" note promptly into the fire Though I have a feeling Jamie is still going to go back for her.

Brienne's story finally ended up in an interesting place, and her fight with "The Biter" and confrontation with Lady Stoneheart are some of the few parts of this book that would make for great television.

Sansa and Arya have little to do, though Arya's gradual transformation into a cold-blooded assassin has promise (I liked the reveal that she killed the playboy Crow bard and stole his boots).

What's going on with Sam and the Iron Islands drops teasing hints how it will all tie in with Dany and her dragons (and I suppose an exciting pirate battle/raid scene could be made of this). The new characters and setting in Dorne were potentially interesting but didn't really go anywhere.

I'm still working on The Silkworm. I'll finish it sometime. Stinkin' library holds keep coming old and I only have a couple weeks to read them before my lending period ends...

I really liked this. I don't read a ton of non-fiction, but I found this very interesting and informative.

I really enjoyed the first in the series, so I'm starting the second.

Anyhoo, am now halfway through Lilith Saintcrow's steampunk fantasy "The Iron Wyrm Affair".

Re: What Are You Reading? (July 2014)

Hell yeah, not even Robert B. Parker's death could keep Cole and Hitch from making their triumphant return to the written word. Taking over for Parker is Robert Knott who co-wrote the screenplay for Appaloosa with Ed Harris.
