What are you reading? (August 2013)

Boosted by a few hours travel time, yesterday I finished the last book and am now part way through versatile Briton Chris Wooding's science fantasy "The Fade".

Very impressed so far!

... excellent. It's been too long since his last novel (at least if you don't count the children's books). And not that I didn't enjoy his comic fantasy stories (like Anansi Boys and American Gods), but I really welcomed a return to a more serious fantasy story (like The Sandman).

Re: What are you reading? (August 2013)

Now started an Instanbul-sited near-future science-fictional tale, The Dervish House by Ian McDonald.

From what I can already tell, TDH is a multiple-viewpoint narrative examining the aftermath of an ostensibly small terrorist incident in the newly-"European" Turkish capital.

Already familiar with his work, I was attracted by the praise it had received from IMcD's fellow-Brits Peter F Hamilton and Richard Morgan. It was also multiply award-nominated, actually winning the British Science Fiction Award.

Of late, McDonald seems to be focussing away from the West: Africa, India, South America.

Really, it's like a narrative version of his SNL "Deep Thoughts" pieces. Funny stuff.

A stall at the Chicago Printer's Row book fair a month or two ago. I forget the name of the store, but he's based in Bolingbrook, IL. Harry Whittington is one of the "Greats". Frederick C Davis is a favorite of mine and kind of underrated. He wrote mainly during the 20s and 30s and added humor to his stories.
