I have heard good things about this zombie book and plan to give it a read this month:

I finally got around to Horns and finished it last night. Great story. It wasn't scary, but Hill wasn't going for that in this book.

Here are a couple of scary book lists. Some authors choose the scariest books they've read:

House of Leaves is fine if you want something that'll take you until Halloween of 2015 to finish.

I'd instead recommend a good Richard Matheson short story collection. I picked up this one a few years ago:

Aside from the title story, it's also got "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" (adapted for The Twilight Zone), "Duel" (adapted into an excellent Spielberg film), "Button, Button" (adapted for the 1980s Twilight Zone and more recently as The Box), and some terrific lesser known stories like "The Distributor." (You can view the full content list here.)

I have yet to read any Dan Simmons. Is this a good one to start with?

Its my favorite of all his books. A unique twist on the usual vampire stories.
