House of Leaves is fine if you want something that'll take you until Halloween of 2015 to finish.
I'd instead recommend a good Richard Matheson short story collection. I picked up this one a few years ago:
Aside from the title story, it's also got "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" (adapted for The Twilight Zone), "Duel" (adapted into an excellent Spielberg film), "Button, Button" (adapted for the 1980s Twilight Zone and more recently as The Box), and some terrific lesser known stories like "The Distributor." Its my favorite of all his books. A unique twist on the usual vampire stories.
