Justin Cronin - The Twelve (10-16-12)

I was looking at my bookshelf and realized that The Passage should be due for it's sequel soon. Sure enough, it's right around the corner. I loved The Passage and can't wait for this one... looks like a good time to read it again in preparation.
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
In the present day, as the man-made apocalypse unfolds, three strangers navigate the chaos. Lila, a doctor and an expectant mother, is so shattered by the spread of violence and infection that she continues to plan for her child’s arrival even as society dissolves around her. Kittridge, known to the world as “Last Stand in Denver,” has been forced to flee his stronghold and is now on the road, dodging the infected, armed but alone and well aware that a tank of gas will get him only so far. April is a teenager fighting to guide her little brother safely through a landscape of death and ruin. These three will learn that they have not been fully abandoned—and that in connection lies hope, even on the darkest of nights.

One hundred years in the future, Amy and the others fight on for humankind’s salvation . . . unaware that the rules have changed. The enemy has evolved, and a dark new order has arisen with a vision of the future infinitely more horrifying than man’s extinction. If the Twelve are to fall, one of those united to vanquish them will have to pay the ultimate price.

It's funny, I looked the same thing up yesterday. I haven't read much in a while, but yesterday I made a list of some books that I wanted to read that were released in the last year or two and was surprised that this one isn't out yet.

I liked the first one enough to check out the sequel. Don't know if I'll pay hardcover price for it, though...

Yeah, I read The Passage in June, and I'm curious enough to read this one just to see what happens. I don't see myself rereading the first one though--thought it was way too long and it could have used a ton of editing.

First one was excellent. I pre-ordered this about a month ago... however, I can't recall much of how the first went down outside of the HUGE time jump and the ending that seemed like it could have been a total conclusion.

This is a no go for me. I wanted to chuck the first one into the ocean when I read that ending...

I'll be checking this out. Bought The Passage when it came out and tore through it on vacation. I'm not going to re-read it but I'm gonna have to find a summary somewhere as I can't remember much outside of the general plot and time jump.

Have it requested from the library. I liked The Passage, but I can hardly remember anything about it.
Hope there's a recap.....

I just read the Passage again and it was definitely better the second time around for me. The middle section of the book was not slow or disjointed. I still liked most of the characters. I am looking forward to the second book!

At that price they should include some special features like interview with the author or exclusive artwork.

And this has always been brought up but they should start putting a free kindle version if you buy the physical book.

Yeah, that seems to be becoming standard for the big new releases. I think I payed close to that for Stephen King's 11/22/63.

Also, crap. As the thread starter, I'm ashamed to say I still haven't gotten around to re-reading this. I've gotten distracted by Lovecraft.
I may wait until the trilogy is done and just read them all then.

Re: Justin Cronin - The Twelve (10-16-12)

Just finished the "The Twelve." My recommendation is that you will need to reread the entire "The Passage" first because there are details in the second book that to make sense, you would have needed to understand it from the first book. I thought this book was disjointed and really not as exciting or well written as the first. The characters had the same names but I just didn't care about them like I did in the first book. It was definitely not as good as the first book. I will read the last book in this trilogy but just to see how it will end.

Re: Justin Cronin - The Twelve (10-16-12)

I finally re-read The Passage and am somewhere within the first 100 pages of The Twelve. One thing I found upsetting early on:
Spoiler:
Theo and Maus are apparently dead?!? Me no like.

Re: Justin Cronin - The Twelve (10-16-12)

Just finished this as well. I liked the Passage better.
Spoiler:

This one was kind of all over the place until the last 20%. the pieces all came together nicely but some where pretty predictable or else so unpredictable that I didnt care for them.

i guess the final book will be them chasing down Zero. I thought Zero died in the Passage but i guess not or it wasnt said one way or the other. so now are they living in a world with no virals except for the ones of Zero's line? that would just been Lish and Amy from what we've been told? Will Lish change into an Amy style battle-viral?

one thing i didnt like about The Twelve was that most of the actual twelve didnt do anything. After the Passage, i thought the next two books would be about Peter/Lish/Amy chasing down each of the Twelve but instead its just about a 3rd string 'red eye' Hitler-guy and the twelves dont do anything and only two are actually talked about in detail.

That's how I felt. The first third of The Passage was derivative, but fairly compelling. But the middle section in the colony felt tedious. It picked up during the last third, but by then I had mostly checked out.

Re: Justin Cronin - The Twelve (10-16-12)

Finished this last night. What in the world could Cronin possibly do for a 500+ page 3rd novel? There's nothing left. DaveNinja -- you hit the nail on the head. I'm very disappointed.
