Where do you go for book reviews?

I'm curious to know where everyone gets their book reviews (assuming you read book reviews instead of going strictly by word of mouth). If you do have a particular site or reviewer you use often, what is it that keeps you going back to that source?

Re: Where do you go for book reviews?

I tend to type the title or the author into Google and see what results! The resultant list then provides a variety of views...

Often these are within Amazon (and may need some kind of filter) but, certainly for science fiction, I'll often peruse Infinityplus or, for titles from earlier days, see what Dave Langford has to say on Ansible.

I usually use GoodReads though it does seem to have a lot of people with 'agendas' writing reviews.

The New York Review of Books is very good as a hard copy publication.

I typically read reviews on Goodreads and Amazon.

I also subscribe to the British based Literary Review which is good reading in itself and is full of reviews of interesting books that I would simply not find on my own.

Is that an e-mail newsletter or web site you can subscribe to?

Re: Where do you go for book reviews?

There are very few "professional" reviews I trust when it comes to books anymore...I've been burned too many times. I primarily trust Amazon customer reviews and friend recommendations.

Re: Where do you go for book reviews?

I read a lot of scifi/fantasy. It seems you won't find too many useful book reviews unless the book is a NYT bestseller (top 10 or so).

I frequently visit www.mobileread.com which is a great book forum. It's geared towards ereaders but there is a large section of just book reading/recommendation, etc. for those still using old, busted paper

Re: Where do you go for book reviews?

I used to use Amazon.com's users reviews, because it gave a good range of critiques, but with the whole outcry over the price of ebooks, and thousands of people giving books they haven't read one star just because of the price, it became useless.
