Is anyone a fan of his tales? Fu Manchu is probably his most well known one but he also did others like Sumuru, lots of ancient Asian sinisterism but he was apparently obsessed with Egyptian things too. I like his tales for having this weird eerie atmosphere in there, very much like Robert E Howard actually.

Not me. I have a real high tolerance for outdated attitudes in fiction, but even I can't take the racism of Sax Rohmer. The racism isn't an unfortunate cultural artifact; it's the whole point of the stories.

I did think it was funny that the mysterious East that was controlled by Dr Fu Manchu began around Algeria, continued nonstop to Japan, and included all Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, Confucians, and Shintoists.

Re: Sax Rohmer

I don't think he's that racist if he spends nearly half a century writing about his most popular title character even though a villain.

Brood of the Witch-Queen is good.
