The "Was J D Salinger Overrated" Thread
R.I.P to the author of the world's most overrated novel.
EDIT: Honest mistake. Meant novel in reference to "Catcher in the Rye" not novels in reference to his entire work.

I think it's a stretch to call Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, or Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction overrated when most people aren't even aware that Salinger wrote anything other than The Catcher In The Rye.

Why do you think he's in a mental institution at the end? Surely you don't think they sent him there for being an asshole?

It's also a stretch to call them novels in the first place...

BTW I'll argue any day of the week that Eric the Midget has contributed more towards the cultural enrichment of society than fucking "Catcher in the Rye" any day of the week.

I agree, but for the sake of keeping things simple for those that aren't even aware he wrote something other than The Catcher In The Rye I just call them novels, even though really the rest of his stuff is (mostly) just short stories about the Glass Family.

How does his combat experience affect the quality of his writing? If Dean Koontz had more medals than Audie Murphy, would that make his books any better?

Pompous? For some reason, you decided to open up this tribute thread and (multiple times) post your negative thoughts about the work of a man who just passed away. Plus, you're basically questioning the literary tastes and intellect of anyone who enjoys his work. If that doesn't reek of pompous, I don't know what does.
