Here are the 2003 Edgar Award nominees:

BEST NOVEL

Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews (HarperCollins)
Jolie Blon's Bounce by James Lee Burke (Simon & Schuster)
City of Bones by Michael Connelly (Little, Brown)
Winter and Night by S.J. Rozan (St. Martin's Minotaur)
No Good Deed by Manda Scott (Bantam)

BEST FIRST NOVEL BY AN AMERICAN AUTHOR

Southern Latitudes by Stephen J. Clark (Penguin Putnam)
The Blue Edge of Midnight by Jonathon King (Dutton)
High Wire by Kam Majd (Random House)
Buck Fever by Ben Rehder (St. Martin's Minotaur)
Open and Shut by David Rosenfelt (Mysterious Press)

I only read 3 of them, but they were all quite good. City of Bones is probably the best of the lot and is reviewed on Mystery Ink. (Blue Edge of Midnight is also reviewed.) Open and Shut is the other one I read, although I didn't review it.

The MWA missed the best mystery of 2002, though, which was George Pelecanos' Right as Rain.

California Girl, T. Jefferson Parker's tale of murder in '60s-era Southern California, was named best novel of 2004 by Mystery Writers of America.

Parker's Edgar Allan Poe Award was one of a dozen announced Thursday at the organization's annual banquet in New York. The Edgars recognize the year's best in mystery fiction, nonfiction, television scripts and films. This is the second best-novel Edgar for Parker, who won in 2002 for Silent Joe.

Other winners include:

•Best first novel by an American author: Country of Origin by Don Lee.
•Best paperback original: The Confession by Domenic Stansberry.
•Best fact crime: Conviction: Solving the Moxley Murder: A Reporter and a Detective's Twenty-Year Search for Justice by Leonard Levitt. Nominees in this category included Are You There Alone? The Unspeakable Crime of Andrea Yates by Rice University writer in residence Suzanne O'Malley.
•Best short story: Something About a Scar from the collection Anything You Say Can and Will Be Used Against You by Laurie Lynn Drummond.
•Best critical/biographical: The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes edited by Leslie S. Klinger.
•Best young adult: In Darkness, Death by Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler.
•Best juvenile: Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett.
•Best motion picture screenplay: A Very Long Engagement, screenplay by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, based on the novel by Sebastien Japrisot.
Houston bookseller Martha Farrington, owner of Murder by the Book, was presented a Raven award honoring her contributions to the genre.
I have California Girl and The Confession in my to-read pile and recently picked up the New Annotated Sherlock Holmes set.

In retrospect, way back when I erred in combining the genre award threads.

So.... does anyone want to take the lead and keep this one updated?

In the circumstances, it is quite amusing to see that this Edgar (& BSFA) nominee recently won the Nebula and currently is in the running for a Hugo!

THEAKSTONS CRIME NOVEL AWARD SHORTLIST

Winner: Rubbernecker - Belinda Bauer
The Red Road - Denise Mina
The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter - Malcolm Mackay
The Chessmen - Peter May
Dying Fall - Elly Griffiths
Eleven Days - Stav Sherez

A novel about a student with Asperger's syndrome who investigates a murder has won a top crime writing award.

Rubbernecker by Belinda Bauer has been named crime novel of the year at the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Bauer's fourth novel, it tells the story of Patrick Fort, an anatomy student who suspects the body he is dissecting is a murder victim.

It beat books by Denise Mina, Malcolm Mackay, Elly Griffiths and Stav Sherez.

Mina was going for a hat-trick after winning the prize the previous two years in a row.

Bauer started her writing career as a journalist before winning a screenwriting competition run by Bafta in the 1990s.

She only had one script filmed - Happy Now, starring Ioan Gruffudd and Alison Steadman - but that was never released and she turned to writing novels instead.

"I'm a failed screenwriter," she said. "That became so soul-destroying, because you really pour your heart and soul into it.

"I wrote my first book Blacklands, and that was so successful that I immediately knew I could become a novelist rather than a screenwriter."

Her career change paid off when Blacklands won the British Crime Writers' Association's Gold Dagger Award in 2010.

Thirty per cent of all novels sold in the UK are crime stories, amounting to 17 million physical books per year, according to Nielsen Book Research.
