I read a real good book of short stories years ago and now I can't remember the author's name. They were humorous stories about life in the rural south during the 1940's or 1950's. Some were crazy "slice of life" type stories that involved colorful locals, sort of in the style of Mark Twain. I remember one that was about a man who has a heart attack and his buddies hook him up to the pick up truck with a set of jumper cables and revive him. I know it's a vague question but just thought someone could identify the author.

I know Faulkner wrote short stories but the topic doesn't sound like him.
