Going to NYC next week.Any good used book stores?

My wife'll be all gaga over visiting Broadway, seeing the Statue of Liberty, and shopping. Me, I'll be happy just to peruse a few good book stores. Used preferably, but, if there are some good bookstores other than Borders and B&N, I'll check them out as well.

Can anyone help me with some addresses? Much appreciated.

Holy Jeezus! 18 miles of books? I'll think I'm in Heaven.

Thanks for that suggestion.

Keep 'em comin'.

Strand is all you need. There are 2 stores, I actually like the less famous one (near Wall Street).

Unfortunately B&N/Borders has killed a lot of the best bookstores here. The Strand is good, and with it's new friendly face you actually stand a decent chance of finding something specific, unlike the days of old.

St. Mark's Books is worth a look, they tend to stock some things you won't find in other places, mostly academic/critical theory stuff. They do carry the standard fiction, sci-fi, history, etc. as well.

If you like mysteries, there's a decent mystery bookstore on Greenwich Ave, but I can't remember the name right now.

Aside from that... there's not a whole lot. No real great used bookstores aside from the Strand. If your politics are left-wing there are a few bookstores that cater to that.

There are two excellent mystery bookstores in NYC:

Partners & Crime:
44 Greenwich Avenue

and Otto Pennzler's famed Mysterious Bookshop:
58 Warren Street

I remember when there were only two Barnes and Nobles stores, period, on 18th street and 5th avenue - one was the main store, and the other was the sales annex. My mom would take me and my sister there in the mid-seventies. You should at least bop by and see it for what it's worth.

I agree with the other posters in that many niche book stores are gone now because of the larger chains. It's really a shame too. I also agree that the Strand is an experience unto itself!

Strand (been going there with my Dad since I was 6 years old), make sure you visit the rare book department upstairs. I'm not sure whether it's now accessible within the store (used to have to take separate elevator)
Bauman Rare Books on ~55th and Madison (high end book seller)
Books of Wonder (18 West 18th St. New York, NY 10011, http://www.booksofwonder.com/, Children's books)
A good used book seller is across the street from Books of Wonder, forgot the name
