fan fiction?
So now that the harry potter series is done, I was thinking about getting into fan fiction. I've never read em before but a friend of mine says that some are quite good. I've seen a site with over 40,000 stories! If anyone on here has read any of the fan fiction, which ones are the best of the bunch? I've also been thinking about writing my own harry potter fan fiction. How would I go about posting the stories? I tried signing up for one of the sites but it wouldn't allow me too. What is the process involved with posting?
thanks :}

OK, I'll out myself as a fanfiction, uh...fan.
One of my favorite sites is siye.co.uk ; I'm a fan simply because many of the stories are plausible in the HP world, whereas many of other fan fictions may not be. The site centers around the Harry/Ginny relationship, but that doesn't mean it's always a focal point. On the other hand, some stories focus too much on the romantic angle. But if that's your thing...
Either way, I'd check that out.
Also check out Mugglenet's fan fiction site (they have some sort of top 10 lists that might be worth a gander). I don't think they update as much as the other sites, though.
'The Seventh Horcrux' by 'Melindaleo' (she has a .com) is also a pretty fun year 7 fanfic that shared quite a lot of similarities with Deathly Hallows.
Finally, fictionalley.org is another extensive HP Fanfic site that allows you to search specifically for just about any kind of HP fan-fiction. It's probably the best site to start with.
My advice would be to read other reader's reviews and reactions; there is a lot out there, but it sucks to invest a lot of time into a story that isn't well written.
Oh yeah, submitting fanfiction is actually pretty simple. Most writers submit to multiple sites, including the three I mentioned. Fictionalley has a bunch of tips for writing and submitting. And submitting consists mostly of creating a username and posting stories under that name.
Alright, hope that helps.

It's written by untalented hacks who don't have the ability or imagination to do their own thing. Why on Earth would you want to subject yourself to that when there is SO MUCH good, original literature out there to be read?

mgbfan, I am asking you to resist the temptation to threadcrap any further here.
You are very much out of synch with the letter and the spirit of the first post and, to be frank, anyone reading here for any length of time could almost have written your post for you.
WE GET IT!
But this was not the right place.
And, while you may feel inclined to take this further off-topic in order to point out why I am wrong.... please don't.
Everyone else, back to the subject at hand. Or simply let the thread die. It's all good.

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past is a very entertaining post HBP story that theorizes that though Harry does eventually beat Voldemort everybody he loves ends up dying (some of the deaths are quite emotional; Harry relives them in his nightmares). He travels back in time in a rather complicated fashion to shortly after his 11th birthday and decides to relive his Hogwarts years while "cheating like Draco Malfoy". The story is not complete (currently Harry is in his 3rd year), but there are payoffs for each of the normal book stories so right now it's like it's sort of in the third book (right now the story's at about 320,000 words).

Those stories sound preety good. I love the whole ginny harry relationship. and to respond to mgbfans post, I plan on reading harry potter fan fiction whenever I get lonely for more harry potter stories since we wont have one from Rowling herself. There's also some very funny fan fiction of shows like arthur that I've checked out that are quite good.
Thanks for all the recommendations.

I don't want to divert anyones attention, but MGBFan, as has already been pointed out, fan fiction is a way for fans of a particular set of characters or settings to immerse themselves in a familiar and well-loved literary world. Sure, lots of it may be written poorly, but much of it is actually pretty good.

I just read the Harry Potter article in the NY Times...
There's a Chinese version of the 7th book, titled "Wolf Totem." In the article, the Chinese publication said that the fan fiction "Wolf Totem" is so good that Rowling probably won't write the 7th book if she had read it. Man, i'm tempted to read it! Of course, it's in Chinese and that's another story...
