What Are You Reading? April 2007

This is a bit of a cheat, since I've not yet started, but the volume I have in my bag for next week is China Mieville's collection ""Looking for Jake & Other Stories".

Nirvana: The Biography by Everett True.

Packed full of info from people who were actually there and involved with the band, but comes across like a 600 page magazine article. The author says in the intro that this is "a book about NIRVANA", but it's just as much a book about "Everett True" who interjects his opinions as much as he can into the pages. Not to mention his completely whacked out opinions of tsunamis (which according to him, are not caused by earthquakes, but because of America's "horrible treatment of the environment".)

If you can ignore his wacko rhetoric and opinions, it's a good book (so far).

Hi All,
Im pretty new to this thread (mostly because I pretty much stopped reading for fun for about 4 years.) Anyway I just finished Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince yesterday and am craving more books so I am going to start with George R.R. Martin, which I just ordered.

I think I will pick up the Golden Compass at the library today though, so I might read that before I start up Martin.

Since we had a tribute in this area to HP Lovecraft this past weekend I have decided to read some of his short stories starting with Herbert West - The Reanimator. This guy was a classic!

Definitely a must read for fans of the Duane Swierczynski books I recommended here.

Now I'm about 200 pages into what is finally my answer to the void of intelligent fantasy I've been dying to fill ever since I've had Martin perfect the genre for me. Anyone a fan of Martin & genre bending fantasy this is a must read book so far:

Just my opinion, but when I read George RR Martin's books, the dark adult themes of it almost ruined me on being able to enjoy fantasy that wasn't uber dark. Therefore I'd recommend you read Pullman's trilogy first, and then delve into Martin's stuff. I just finished The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials Book 3) last week, and believe me, it's a fantastic series, one you don't want to start while you're carrying mental baggage from another series. Of course, that baggage problem may just be me. And I'm sure someone will disagree with what I've said.
Anyway, I'm about to start this at the request of a friend:

I'm also reading this too, started a couple of weeks ago. It was a bit daunting at first to start, just because of the length and I don't spend that much time reading..... figured I could do it in 4 weeks. But the story just really pulled me in. I'm pretty disciplined in getting to bed at night on time so I get enough sleep for the next workday, but right now, I'm about 2/3 through the book and it is getting very hard to put it down each night. I love it.

just finished with Scott Smith's 'The Ruins' on Tuesday. i thought it was a worthy follow-up to his 'Simple Plan' and i do wish he wouldn't make us wait years for his 3rd book.

started on Michael Connelly's 'The Poet' on Tuesday and about 100 pages in. it's pretty good so far.

after this I intend to start on 'Red Dahlia'.

Right now I am finishing up a compilation of horror stories, but my copy of Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill came in the mail today, so that is next. After that I think I am gonna read Beneath Still Waters by Matthew J. Costello.

I did some research in this series. It's up to the 7th book now, and the reviews at Amazon say it just keeps getting better and better. I never heard of it before now, but I just moved it up on my list to be read next. So, thanks for the unintentional recommendation!
