What Are You Reading? November 2006

Another month, another thread.

I just put down Lisey's Story because I just could not get into it at all. I may pick it up at a later date, but for now I'll pass it on to my wife and see if she enjoys it better than I.

Now reading:

I just finished Mapping the Edge (Dunant) and am now on The Good German (Canon). I recently ordered Lisey's Story (King), The Black Dahlia (Ellroy), The Road (McCarthy), Guests of the Ayatollah (Bowden), Freakonomics (Levitt), Sharp Objects (Flynn), Oh What a Slaughter (McMurtry), The Colorado Kid (King) and World War Z (Brooks). Not sure which one I'll be starting on next, but I'll probably get through all of them by the end of the year.

Flyboys, by James Bradley... talks about the navy pilots in ww2, and the overall behavior of Japanese soldiers against U.S. POWs.

Good book so far...

I will say there were a few parts that irritated me. I realize he was trying to be aggressive about his points on atheism, but at times he got a little too self-richeous for my tastes. Still a great book though and does give you a lot to think about.

Lastblade 11-06-06 08:54 AM

Still reading The Foundation Trilogy (Asimov).

The Prince. Eh.. To really understand the book you need to understand Renaissance Italy in the 1500's and I don't. It would also help if you knew your Roman emperors as well, which again I don't.

I do have a 15 hour lecture on the subject on audio book and I am learning a lot from that, however I'm not sure if it is worth all the hassle. :)

I'm reading this classic again and loving it. I'm working on my MA in English, so I have very little time for leisure reading. For those who aren't aware, Apocalypse Now is based on this book.

Next class starts next week and its Film Genres. Should be fun!

This one's pretty cool. The Japanese culture comes through pretty well in the translation. Hardly any vampires so far, but cool information about high school and college activism during Vietnam. I'm sure there will be plenty of vampires later on.

Blood: The Night of the Beasts was very, very cool. Basically if you like most of Mamoru Oshii films, you will dig it. Very brief action and not a lot of vampire sightings, but the dialogue was really neat and the humor very dry (in a good way).

Started this. A bittersweet moment. I've been putting this one off because it is the last Sci Fi book of his that I haven't read and his next book, "Matter", is not going to be Sci Fi and we won't see another one for a loooong time. I love his non genre fiction (some of it is practically sci fi) but my favorites are his Culture books. I'm already loving the shit out this one, but I'm a little sad that this is it.
