Favorite James Ellroy novels?
Just picked up blood on the moon and loving it, I'm probably going to skip black dahlia and l.a. confidential because I've seen the movies.
What are his best?

I would highly recommend reading The Black Dahlia and L.A. Confidential as the books are infinitely better than the movies. There is so much plot contained in both books that big subplots had to be left out of both movies.
I would recommend starting with The Black Dahlia as it is Ellroy's most 'traditional' novel, and if you can get used to his writing style then continue on to The Big Nowhere, the next in the L.A. Quartet.
I'm currently reading American Tabloid and, while the plot is very dense and there are lots of characters, it is very enjoyable. His prose has gotten more and more spare as his novels have progressed over the years, but there is so much plot packed into those short, staccato sentences of his. Hope you enjoy!
