I thought the trailer was good, but seemed to give away too many information. Though an informal poll of people who hadn't read the book (but saw the trailer) seemed to indicate that it was still rather mysterious. When I ask "What do you think this movie is about?" I got answers all over the place: evil natives who want to sacrifice teenages to their god, ghosts, aliens, prehistoric monsters, psycho killers, mass halucinations. In fact
Spoiler:
it seemed everything was guessed EXCEPT the right answer: killer plants!

Refresh my memory, I don't recall the convenience store scene in the book (it's been what, 12 years since I read the book). The two big changes that I do recall being made for the movie (spoilerized for those unfortunate few who never read that masterpiece) :
Spoiler:
1 : Made the brother character much more compliant, even complicit, with his murder, making the main character seem less cold blooded. 2: Eliminated the really sad coda about the baby getting brain damaged with a near-drowning. I was okay with that -- the story was already sad enough.

BTW : That movie was 1999, I think. I could be wrong about this, but I don't think I've seen Bridget Fonda in anything since that. I miss her.

Spoiler:
He did it when he went to retrieve the spent money because it was marked.

When I saw Cloverfield they played the trailer for this movie before hand. Many people speculated it was evil killer worms.

Whoa, you're right. I totally forgot that was left out of the movie. I guess there was a concerted effort to make the main character seem more a victim of circumstance and less of a cold-blooded murderer. I wonder if that scene was shot and taken out after test audiences disliked it or whether it was never shot. I'll look into it.

Also I noted that Stacy goes down the shaft in what appears to be the first trip down instead of Eric; it's almost like they've switched her charcter with Eric's from what we get from that trailer

Obviously, there were liberties taken with the story, even though Smith wrote the screenplay himself. I wonder how it'll turn out...
I think you're wrong about number 1 being shown in the trailer - I think that actually
Spoiler:
is Pablo getting shot...from still's I've seen, it looks like Mathias falls down the hole and Pablo probably bites it early on.

I just read the book and loved it but the movie looks...different...switching Eric to Stacy...I'm not sure how that'll work but hopefully since Smith wrote the screenplay, it'll at least stay true in tone to the book.

Well, I ponied up my $6 for the matinee...really not too bad. Of course, it helps that I'm easily entertained and love almost any film in a theater setting.

Haven't seen the movie, but just finished the book a couple of hours ago, and really liked it. I am definitely interested in seeing the movie though. Before reading the book, I knew that it had received a number of positive reviews, but I had no idea about what the actual bad guy was. I had also assumed that it dealt with human sacrifice, but I did catch on pretty early as to what was happening.
