Good Modern War Books

Squad based combat, small groups of soliders doing special ops. I've been reading a lot of WWII books and want a change of pace. Something along the lines of Rainbow 6 or Blackhawk Down

I just saw this yesterday and thought it looked and sounded pretty awsome. Maybe that's the kind of thing your looking for?

Don't know much modern military fiction. The Rogue Warrior series is popular with people from what I've heard...

I definately recommend "Generation Kill" by Evan Wright. Whatever your political leanings its a fairly evenly handled account by an embedded reporter. Lively and harrowing reportage. Its better than Black Hawk Down in many ways because you really get to know these guys.

Jarhead by Anthony Swofford. Its controvertial. Its definately not a book recruiters will want you to read and many feel it was a betrayal of their fellow Marines. I only came with more respect for the guys who had to sacrifice their lives literally and figuratively. Its definately one of the most depressing books I've ever read. If a reader is looking for vicarious military thrills this is not it.

And of course D-Day, Citizen Soldiers, and Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose

I read the book Jarhead, it's good and about the author's experiences including during Desert Shield / Storm.

It was made into a movie which is, I believe, being released today.

Another one of my favorites is a book written by a sniper in Vietnam called "Dear Mom: A Sniper's Vietnam” It’s basically the autobiography of Joseph Ward, who was a Marine Scout Sniper, from before boot camp until after he comes home. As I remember, he starts the chapters with letters he had written to his mother, then the rest of the chapter is him talking about whatever. Or, as a reviewer says from amazon.com, "Ward's letters to his mom are placed perfectly in the book and it's sad because he tells his mom the fake story and the reader the real factual story that no parent of a soldier wants to hear."

Very good.

Here’s the book at Amazon if you wanted to read some reviews:

If you want fiction, there’s the Tom Clancy books of course.
