Rank the Harry Potter books

I just finished reading them all last night, and I'd put them in the following order.

1. Goblet of Fire
2. Prisoner of Azkaban
3. Chamber of Secrets
4. Order of the Phoenix
5. The Sorceror's Stone.

So basically, I enjoyed each more than the last as Harry got oldre and the books got darker with the exception of book 5. It was still very good, but it just seemed a little disjointed and the story wasn't as compelling as most of the other books and there was no big surprise at the end.

I too just finished them about a month ago. I saw the 3rd movie and it motivated me to start where I left off (half way through the first one). I finished all 5 in about 3 weeks (which is a record for me, since I rarely read for pleasure).

Here's my list:

1. Goblet of Fire (Year 4)
2. Prisoner of Azkaban (Year 3)
3. Order of the Phoenix (Year 5)
4. Chamber of Secrets (Year 2)
5. Sorcerer's Stone (Year 1)

1. Goblet of Fire
2. Prisoner of Azkaban
3. Order of the Phoenix*
4. Sorcerer's Stone
5. Chamber of Secrets

* The growth of the other characters kept Order of the Phoenix & the awesome title from falling lower - Harry's constant whining hit a nerve.

After reading peoples lists, I guess I'd like to hear some explanations on why they ranked them that way.

Esp from Grafenberg. I guess I'd love to hear why you ranked CoS 2nd and PoA 4th.

I'm not trying to start anything with anyone, just truly curious.

Since I requested it, I guess I'll add my reasons.

1. Goblet of Fire - Just so much going on in this book. The book starts off interesting and for me just keeps that feeling going.

2. Prisoner of Azkaban - Love the story in this one. After the first 2 books dealing with Voldemort directly, it was nice to have a book that brought in some back story. The chapter(s) in the shreiking shack and afterwards were some of the best parts of the Harry Potter story to date.

3. Order of the Phoenix - Harry's whining aside, I really liked the development in this book. The action and subsequent ending were very entertaining and kept me reading and finding it hard to put the book down. It was nice to see the development of some of the main teachers as well as some of the lines they had.

It was a tossup for me between these two. Every list I read has CoS as the worst of the books out to date. I didn't much care for CoS, though it did have a few parts in it that saved it.

I guess I ranked SS 5th is because of the way she writes. I know these books are mainly geared towards kids, but the first 3-4 chapters of book 1 almost had me put it down to never pick it up again. She over explained things and felt the need to dwell on mundane things. She had added in too much description of certain things.

But I am glad I made myself continue on, because I would have missed out on the great books 3, 4 and 5.

4. Chamber of Secrets

5. Sorcerer's Stone

I've read the entire series (except OoftP) four times. I'm prepping to re-read Phoenix in the coming months.

1. GOF - I just find this one the most enjoyable from start to finish. It had the most magical feeling to it. The Quidditch World Cup, the Tournament of Champions, Moody, the final confrontation w/ Lord Voldemort. Edge of the seat, stay up all night excitement and suspense. This one left me thirsting for the next book more than all the others combined.

2. OoftheP - It lands in the 2nd spot because of the immense amount of revelations about the magical world that comes with it. We were exposed to a lot more of how that world functions and really got outside of Hogwarts. The revelations, the creation of new question to be answered, and the whole bad-ass order thing just make it edge out the first three. I respected that JKR made Harry view his father differently. While James wasn't a bad person in the larger scheme of things, he also wasn't the altruistic choir boy that Harry believed him to be. For most children, part of coming to age is realizing that life and actions are more complex than "in the moment". Plus, I'll be the first to admit I probably looked like a dork as I smiled and laughed outloud at Fred & George's antics, especially their exit scene from Hogwarts.

3. PofA - I enjoy this one more with each reading. For me the Marauder's Map and Lupin are just amazing. Sirius is great, too, but you don't really have a strong connection until the end of the book. My personality type works well with the theme of Buckbeak and Sirius getting away. Justice and what is right prevails over what the "law" says.

4. Philosopher's Stone - This book still holds a special spot because it introduced it all. To be honest, I started this book twice and stopped. I struggled through the first couple of chapters because of Harry's situation and how he was treated. I've never lived under a cupboard or been treated cruelly by relatives so I can't explain exactly why. It just really bothered me. However, once he got the letters and it kicked in I couldn't put the book down. It was a lot of fun to read this to my 7 year old and see the excitement build in him with each chapter.

5. CofSecrets - I have just never enjoyed this one as much as the others. I'm not sure I can put a good excuse up as to why. The final "battle" sequence doesn't sit very well with me. I appreciate its place in the series and the additional information it revealed, though.

After reading the sixth book, I'm happy to say that its now ranked high.

1. Goblet of Fire - I guess I found this book more exciting than the others, had a lot going on. The Quidditch World Cup, heck I would love to play this game! and the Tournament of Champions - Got to learn more about how Harry would battle his way to defeat Lord Voldemort.

2. Half blood Prince - Kinda feel like Harry now has an obession with Draco. In a funny way it's kinda what kept me wanting to read, not only to see Harry go crazy not knowing what he was up to, but I wanted to know what the little worm was up to! Another exciting book, I guess as they get older there are more challenges a head of them.

3. The Sorceror's Stone - He was good seeing Harry become friends Ron and, Hermione, as well as develop and understand his powers, very easy going.

4. Prisoner of Azkaban - Knowing more about Harry's parents and who were his friends and who weren't, this book showed it. Not only that but having Hagrid as a teacher, and Harry/Ron/Hermione showing how much they supported him was always something speical. Marauder's Map was something very cleaver, yet you aren't surprised that Fred and George got a hold of it.

5. Chamber of Secrets - I have to say wasn't going to rank highly for me. Although how Harry travelled back into Tom Riddle's memory was something you could tell was going to happen more offen. If only we could do that in our world! I guess I didn't like the Dobey character, guess he just didn't sit well with me in this book.

And I haven't read Order of the Phoenix, completely just yet.
