Need help in finding out a book title

Okay, a wacky professor from the university in my area described the plot to me and it sounded interesting. She said the title of the book was "Wounded Angel" by a Sara Roberts, but I went to Borders and Amazon, searched, and found nothing of note. Granted, her mannerisms reminded me of Trelawney in Harry Potter, and she might have one book confused with another.

The plot: basically, Angels and devils are at war, and it has a lot of historical characters in it with whom the angels speak (one of them being Joan of Arc). However, the angels are not necessarily the good guys. Apparently the angels want some people to sin to keep the world in balance and preserve a status quo of sorts among mankind.
The individual who wrote it is allegedly a good historian and the history in the book is supposed to be very accurate. Furthermore, this kind of stuff really fascinates me.

I remember reading a novel a few years ago about a war between angels and fallen angels, but for the life of me I can't remember the title.

The angels were all mean, gun-toting mofos, and all I can really recall is a human character got drawn in somehow.

sounds a bit like Sara Douglass's "Crucible" series:
The Nameless Day, The Wounded Hawk and The Crippled Angel.

edit: here is her website

This is not the book your looking for (based upon what you described), but this fairly similar if you want an amusing read about angels:

Read that one, and loved it! You know that at one point there was going to be a movie of that made with Terry Gilliam as the director?

It was going to have Johnny Depp and Robin Williams as the demon and angel.

I just got the first book of the crucible series by Sara Douglass for 29 Austrailian dollars. What will that translate into in American cash?
