Ahh ... appeal to majority. The most pedestrian of logical fallacy.

Actually, NEUMANN, I merely corrected you on your misuse of the term, and the origins of it, but I'm not sure what the application is here.

In any event, adding NEWMANN and his freight train of logical fallacy to the team certianly is not going to bolster the case for the pro-Dragonlance folks. Trust me, we'll all be a little dumber for having read his "arguments," as we've already seen with his entrance to the thread and his immediate resorting to one of the most basic of logical fallacies.

There are a lot of folks in this discussion disagreeing with me. I feel some of them are misguided, but believe me when I say that I don't feel any of them are in NEUMANN's league of stupidity and blissful ignorance.

In other words ... Welcome to the thread, NEUMANN. You've just lowered the average IQ of those arguing against me by a good 10 points.

I hate to do it, but I'm going to jump in here and try to briefly defend mgbfan.

I understand why some people love the Dragonlance series; they were some of my favorite books when I was a teenager. I revisted the books a few years ago and I could only make it half way through the first book. The prose was horrid and the characters were lacking any complexity.

My tastes had simply developed and matured to a point that such simplistic writing no longer appeals to me. I think if I had read the Dragonlance books as an adult, I would have enjoyed the storytelling, but I wouldn't have been as impressed as I was upon reading them as a youth.

It doesn't surprise me, however, that the books could make it into so many people's Top 10 lists. The fantasy genre is rife with cliched unimaginative writing. There's simply not a large number of fantasy authors who have produced fine literature. There are a lot of great fantasy storytellers, but there are not a lot of fantasy writers producing great literature (this is a problem that is common in most genre writing -- horror, fantasy, romance, mystery, etc.)

I have seen nothing in your arguments other then the doubletalk of a blithering idiot and an arrogant view that your view is the only view.Who cares if you did'nt enjoy dragonlance when you reread them as an adult i can assure you i don't and no one on this thread does.It appears many peolpe still enjoy reading these as an adult and just because you don't does'nt mean they cannot be on this list. And your argument that they are young adult novels is pure BS go into a store and see if you see these in the young adult section you will not.

your main argument has been they are young adult(which they are not) they did not live up to your memories when you reread them as an adult(which nobody cares about and has no standing whatsoever on whether they belong on this list or not.All you have done is come into a thread (like you have so many times before)and displayed your mountain size ego and the fact that your view is the only view that counts.

P.S. i never misused the term sci-fi,only in your mind did i do that

Agreed 100%. It's rare, but not impossible to find. Darkover, Earthsea, Coldfire, etc. It can be done.

Most authors are lazy, though, and find it's just easier to build a party (at least they don't CALL it a fellowship) of humans, elves, dwarves, and wizards that battle dragons, orcs, and other Tolkieneque beasties. Ignoring all of DL's other faults, that's the one that precludes it from belonging on this list. It's somebody else's idea, repackaged.

Some say there are no new ideas, but an author at least ought to make an effort.

</small>When you resort to ad hominem you tend to throw away anything you might have gained in the debate.

Speaking now as a moderator, I am going to remind you one and once only of the Board rules concerning personal attacks. No correspondence will be entered into. And, anyone else tempted to continue to respond in kind [I'm talking to you, NEUMANN], just DON'T do it.

'nuff said.

Oh, I agree. But I've dealt with this individual before and, as evidenced by his debut in this thread, you can check the logical arguments at the door. You'll put your head through a wall trying logic here. I can provide you evidence of this from the Movies subforum if you like.

If and when this poster engages in a logical debate, he'll get a logical debate in return. But you can't argue logically with someone who chooses not to do so. It simply doesn't work. I believe that if you've read this discussion carefully, you know that I won't resort to personal attacks unless first attacked. I don't care for personal flame wars. I'd much rather discuss the issue at hand. But with some people, that's just not going to happen.

That said, you're the mod, so unless NEUMANN contributes materially to the debate at hand, I'll ignore his future posts. I expect I've made my point with him anyway.

If you weren't aware, you can go to your user control panel and put people on an ingore list, then none of there posts show up. You just see something like "you've chosen to ignore messages by this member, click here to see this post" when they post.

I've found it saves a lot of frustration, and keeps you from getting pissed and taking flame bait and ending up with a suspension for a personal attack.
