i read this story in an english class back in 96-97. it had a guy who was in love with this girl that he worked with. he had a job as a clown on the weekends. he bought this girl a big pink wedding cake to propose to her with. she basically didn't know he existed, and he doesn't end up getting the girl in the end. he puts the cake in the middle of the street and runs it over at the end of the story. i can't remember what it's called, or who wrote it. it was in a short story book i read for a class though. i don't know if all of the stories were by the same author either. anyone have any idea?

anybody? i think the cover was white with a forest green color.
