Anybody know what Crichton is working on now?

A "rumor" from his website
http://www.michaelcrichton.com
says he's working on a new book, with a preliminary release date
"around November of 2004, with the sotryline having something to do with Global Warming."

Little real info just yet...

Even though more often than not, I am disappointed with his books, I always look forward to them and his next one is no different in that manner.

Here's the plot, for anybody wanting an advanced peek:
Spoiler:
Scientists make an interesting discovery, which is exploited by the cold-hearted businessman fiancing the operation. Something goes wrong, and people start dying. Ultimately, the lesson that "some things shouldn't be tampered with" is learned.

Wrong wrong wrong
Here's the real deal:
Spoiler:
Sam Neill teams up with the hot daughter of aging Hollywood actor (this time around it is Goldie Hawn's daughter Kate Hudson) as they face a new billionaire played by Adam Sandler in this rags to riches boxing dramedy.

Me too, I was utterly disappointed with Prey, but want to check out his next attempt.

. Last one I read was Timeline. Snoozefest there. Always wanted to pick up Prey, but Timeline left such a bad taste in my mouth I still haven't.

I liked Prey, though parts of it felt like he was writing a screenplay. You can't take a book seriously when it has TWO fiery explosions and when certain scenes just scream CGI FX! :P

I didn't read the book but I did enjoy the movie. Please don't flame for that.

If it does have to do with global warming (and it appears it does based on the little I've read), you can bet he will not take the environmentalists' line (Yay!). Crichton thinks the environmentalists have gone way overboard in their doomcrying (see this week's Parade magazine in many newspapers for a superficial taste of how he feels). For a little more depth, see:

http://mitosyfraudes.8k.com/Polit/Enviro.html and

http://www.sepp.org/NewSEPP/GW-Aliens-Crichton.html .

Apparently, they're keeping a very tight lid regarding what the book is about.

If it's about what I think it's about I can't wait. It's about time someone popular countered the environmentalist view that dominates the mainstream media.

Damn, I still have to get to reading "Prey" sometime, and I've had it almost since it came out!

And I'm in the minority, I loved Timeline.

So out of the clear blue he is releasing a book? Finally started reading Prey. Not as bad as everyone has posted. But then again, I'm only halfway through.

OT, but that is why you don't think it's as bad as everyone posted. Wait 'till you get to the second half then chime in again.

Back on topic - I plan on purchasing this book through Amazon in the next week or so. If anyone would like to participate in STL, reply to this thread or shoot me an email.

I would greatly appreciate any STL action. Just in case no one gets it for me for Christmas.

Another disappointment from Crichton - not a convincing thriller, and the constant sermonizing on the realities of global warming, sea level increase, etc drained the book of any momentum it might have developed.
Glad I didn't pay for it.

...
The "sermons" are what I like best. What I love is that millions of people will read this book and be exposed to "the other side" that is usually ignored and when it is not being ignored, villified by the mainstream media. Probably a thousand times more people will read this book than the excellent, just published nonfiction book by Patrick Michaels, Meltdown : The Predictable Distortion of Global Warming by Scientists, Politicians, and the Media, just because it was written by Crichton. Nothing could get out this message better.

I've read about 150 pages. I'm finding it to be an OK thriller but the educational value is priceless.

I think Michael Crichton does a great job of making his books a perfect mix of fact and entertainment. That's probably why I love his books so much. I don't have much time to read these days, but I'll still get anything he puts out.

John Stossel interviews Crichton on 20/20 tonight (9:00pm CST). From his weekly email:

Friday on "20/20" I talk to Michael Crichton about his new book, "State of Fear," which made me laugh with delight, because the villains are ... well, I won't tell, because I don't want to give the plot away. But finally! A star Hollywood writer/producer is scientifically literate. The "Jurassic Park" author spent three years doing climate research and discovered what he'd heard about global warming made little sense. But he almost didn't write "State of Fear" because he knew it would anger his friends. I'm glad he wrote it, and OK, I'll give it away: the villains are environmental groups! What a switch! In my interview with Crichton, he says: "environmental organizations are fomenting false fears in order to promote agendas and raise money."
I started a thread in "TV Talk":
