If it's an omnibus of relatively short books, then I might go with the omnibus. Unless the individual books had really nifty cover art or something.

If it'll be over a thousand pages, I'd rather have the individual books. Reason being, very thick books tend to have binding problems.

Problem with omnibus books is that they're usually so big that they're cumbersome to read.

It's fine if they're all by the same author (ie. complete works of E.A. Poe), but I don't think I'd buy a mix of authors that way -- too much hassle figuring out where on the shelf it belongs.

I usually get omnibus editions from places like SFBC, when I want to read a series for little money. Then if it's something I really liked, I'll normally go backand buy the individual editions, if they're nicer. Most omnibus editions have hideous cover art, for some reason. I had omnibus versions of LOTR and His Dark Materials series, and enjoyed them enough to buy the nicer trade paperback versions. Then I passed the omnibus editions on to friends.
