From Publishers Weekly:

Summer Special: Harry Set for June 21

As we reported last night, Harry Potter news went down this morning.
In a joint statement, Bloomsbury and Scholastic announced that Harry
Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be published in the U.S.,
Britain, Canada and Australia on the first day of summer, June 21. The
new book will be the longest yet in the Potter series, with more than
255,000 words, compared to over 191,000 words in Goblet of Fire.
Publication will come almost three years after the July 8, 2000,
release of Goblet of Fire which has sold about 16 million copies in
hardcover and paperback. Scholastic has not yet set a price or page
count for its edition of Phoenix; The Bookseller reported that
Bloomsbury’s edition will be 768 pages long and priced at 16.99
pounds.

Damn......June 21....not soon enough, I tell ya!

RayChuang 01-15-03 10:54 AM

Well...

...Let's see how long before Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix will become the #1 most-requested book on Amazon.com. Probably overnight, in my humble opinion. -rolleyes-

djmont 01-15-03 11:16 AM

Why shouldn't it be?

The Antipodean 01-15-03 12:50 PM

WOo hoo! The books are MUCH better than the movies IMHO and I've eagerly awaited the new one. Even longer than Goblet of Fire -- she's certainly making up for the three-year wait! Sounds like it should almost be a two-volume set! :D

Kal-El 01-15-03 12:53 PM

EXCELLENT news. More than enough time to re-read 1-4....twice? :D

Jepthah 01-15-03 01:06 PM

Got 4 books to catch up on. We'll see if Potter-mania can claim me too.

It's already number 1 on their Amazon.com sales rank. And this is from people preordering the book knowing only the release date, but not knowing the price.

To heck with overnight. It was probably sent to #1 in the Amazon pre-sales ranking just after Bloomsbury made the announcement. -rolleyes-

That's a lot of eye rolling going on. What does Ray have against Harry Potter?

Harry doesn't swear, drink and smoke, Ron doesn't carry a big bowie knife he calls Shelia and sleeps with, and Hermione isn't a lesbian goth chick into body piercings and tattoos.

Just a guess :)

And I too will be re-reading all four books before this comes out. I've been itching to re-read them anyways.

Jeremy517 01-16-03 01:29 AM

So when does book six come out?

;)

LarLar 01-16-03 08:03 AM

I pre-ordered it at 50% off from Amazon UK.

PixyJunket 01-16-03 08:43 AM

So I'll be taking June 22nd off. Who's with me?

You work on a Sunday? ;)
I know I'lll be putting up a "Book 5. Go Away" sign at my door for that weekend.

Groucho 01-16-03 09:35 AM

Pretty cool. My wife's birthday is June 24.

Think I should pre-order this? Or will supply meet demand?

I've already pre-ordered through Amazon.com.

Given the fact the first printing of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire sold out in a blink of an eye, I really hope Bloomsbury and Levine/Scholastic better up their initial print run to at least seven million copies. :)

silentbob007 01-16-03 09:55 AM

I can't imagine any bookseller wouldn't buy a zillion copies of this novel, and I would imagine that it would be available at local drug stores, retailers, and supermarkets, too. Unless I get a great pre-order deal, I'll just get it day(or midnight) of ....

Y2K Falcon 01-16-03 10:00 AM

Just got an email from Barnes and Noble to order it at bn.com.

Our Price: $17.97
Reader's Advantage Price: $17.07

And it has already received 3 reviews -rolleyes-, amazingly all 5-stars. (and with lots of exclamation points)

Saw this on CNN.com:

HOW LONG ARE THEY?
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" will clock in at 255,000 words, according to its publishers. Here are the lengths of other literary works:

- "Hawaii," James Michener: 500,000

- "David Copperfield," Charles Dickens: 357,000

- The Bible (King James Version): 181,000

- "Wuthering Heights," Emily Bronte: 116,000

- "Treasure Island," Robert Louis Stevenson: 68,000

- "Julius Caesar," William Shakespeare: 19,000

- Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln: 272

- "The Cat in the Hat," Dr. Seuss: 237

The Bible is only 181,000 words long? Looking at it, it sure seems much longer...

Oh yeah, and I can't wait for Book 5 to come out! I did remember hearing that book 4 was actually going to be the longest... I guess that idea went out the window ;) I just hope it's not too bloated, and is still fast paced like the other books.

the price will most likely be good pretty much anywhere that sells it and i don't think pre-ordering will be crucial. seeing as how long people have waited and gotten irritated at the delay, i would say that the stores/publisher will make sure there's enough. when i worked at B&N during the release of the 4th, we had on order months in advance about 20 boxes full of them...never had a problem selling out till much later after the hype died down.

grunter 01-16-03 10:52 AM

I thought there'd be enough when "Goblet of Fire" came out too.

So I didn't make a concerted effort to pick up the book on its first day of publication - opting instead to wait out the crowds and pick it up a day or two later.

That "day or two later" turned into weeks - because no one, no booksellers, no drugstores, no discount stores, no department stores - no fricken' one - had a copy for sale.

With all the hoopla over the last couple of years with the movies and with virtually every adult having read the series by now, I believe the demand for Book 5 will far eclipse anything we've seen so far.

Personally, I'm putting my pre-order in immediately. With overnight delivery.

I'm not taking a chance again - like last time.

Scot1458 01-16-03 11:49 AM

maybe the book of Job is 181000 words, but not the bible. Oh, it's CNN, that figures.

anybody know when the jim dale audio version will be released?
