(long) Fantasy book series rant

It might be just me - but I grow tired of most fantasy series after the first 2-3 books.

Some things that bug me :

- Lead dudes are getting so powerful that what they have to fight/do is ridicolous
- They walk .. a lot....
- Same cliches used over and over..

So usually after a couple of books in a series, I get tired of it and move on.

You know, this reminds me of this book I've been meaning to write. Here's basics of it- if I'm more specific someone might steal my ideas. It'll have a young male who thinks he destined to work on his dad's farm. But no! He is "the One"! He'll enter into an adventure (most likely because his father is killed) and meet all kinds of strange characters, who in turn will all eventually fall in love with each other. This journey will require him and his companions to cross a continent to defeat an Evil, whose powers are not unlike the powers that our young hero is still learning to master. Throw in a "huge war for the fate of the world" subplot for good measure. Oh yeah, did I mention our young hero will meet a young women who will turn out to not be exactly what we thought she was? Finally, his journey will end by either destroying the Evil or something symbolized by that Evil.
The End.

DISCLAIMER: The story is a work of fiction and in no way is connected to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Dune, and The Wheel of Time series.

Or any other of the millions of stories that have the exact same structure.

To the topic at hand, the only series that I ever got bored with was the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. After about the 7th book I stopped, but I believe that they are up to the high teens now. Any other series with 3-7 books is fine, but that one got to be too much.

Agreed, but a series I never get tired of is the brilliant crime/fantasy/horror Anita Blake books series. The book to start with IMO is Circus of the Damned if you feel like trying it on for size.

That is what i like about many fantasy novels - they follow Joseph Campbells hero cycle and because of that they become almost timeless mythology. Honestly i think that is why things like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Dune, etc. all have a timeless appeal.

Tom Banjo: Dude! Like use spoiler tags when you're ruining the plot to every book on the "fantasy" shelf.

Really.

Ever read Tigana?

It does, to some degree, follow the basic structure, but not the way you think. They do travel great distances, but he (Guy Karviel Kay) doesn't even dwell on that, he only covers the interesting aspect of it. Very well developed characters, and it is not a trilogy. It is a stand alone story. Great stuff. Read it.

Yes, what are you reading? You're probably need some suggestions. Talk a little bit about what you like?

If you're really into an excellent read, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series is fun. Anything be Gene Wolfe is excellent.
