Jonathan Carroll
Anyone else read Jonathan Carroll, I just picked up The Land of Laughs and already really digging his writing style. If anyone else reads him I'd be interested to hear suggestions on what other books of his to read...

Yeah, picked up the land of laughs a month or 2 ago. Liked it a lot. Then gave 'The Wooden Sea' and 'Voice of our Shadow' a try. Out of the 2 'Voice...' is better - similar style. The Wooden Sea has an excellent 1st hundred pages or so then goes rapidly downhill. Whilst 'Voice...' is uneven it might be worth a try. I wouldn't bother with the other. Cheers.

Hi Geoff,
I've been a Carroll fan from way back. I first read CHILD ACROSS THE SKY, which I loved and promptly reread. Then, I read OUTSIDE THE DOG MUSEUM, which was equally fantastic. I love the way he infuses the real world with magic. I also enjoyed SLEEPING IN FLAME and BONES OF THE MOON. That seemed to be his best period. These days, I don't think he's quite as compelling as he was in the 80s and early 90s.

I thought I had a copy of "Outside the Dog Museum" somewhere but I merely must have thought about buying the hardback in a remainder shop some years ago!
From half-remembered reviews that I have read over the years I seem to think that Carroll's fiction would fit into the same category as that of certain of the writings of:-.... all of whom I have read and enjoyed.

Geoff (and any other interested parties), in case you haven't already heard of it, you might be interested in seeking out "Conjunctions: 39, The New Wave Fabulists".
It doesn't seem to feature the three authors listed in my above post and seems to have received mixed reviews.... but you can't have everything!

Thanks for the recommendations! I've ordered a Rachel Pollack book from Bookcloseouts and will check her out.
Just started Bones of the Moon last night and so far I am REALLY enjoying it!

So now I've read - The Land of Laughs, The Wooden Sea and Bones of the Moon.
Of the three the Wooden Sea is actually my favorite, but I did also enjoy Bones of th Moon and the Land of Laughs.

Hey Geoff,
Now you've gotta move on to SLEEPING IN FLAME and CHILD ACROSS THE SKY and OUTSIDE THE DOG MUSEUM. I think those are from his best period.
