New Tom Clancy book

Just saw a new Tom Clancy book is scheduled for release August 5th this year.It will be a prequel of sorts, going back to early in Ryans career and will deal with a Russian plot to kill the Pope.I think this is a great idea.I preferred the books before his presidency where he was able to be more hands on.The title of his new book will be Red Rabbit.

Clancy's new book Red Rabbit at Amazon

List at $14.47 which is 50% off the cover price, not a bad deal at all. My problem is that I'm so far behind in my reading that it'll be cheaper for me to wait for this to hit the bargain section in a year or so.

I believe it is 12.99 at Buy.com (with free shipping) ... this title seems to be the focus of a pricing war between the two.

Gee... I wonder if the "Red" in the title is a reference to Russians. Yes.... wonder.

[From the Amazon review: explaining the time-period involved....]

Spoiler:
Long before he was President or head of the CIA, before he fought terrorist attacks on the Super Bowl or the White House, even before a submarine named Red October made its perilous way across the Atlantic, Jack Ryan was an historian, teacher, and recent ex-Marine temporarily living in England while researching a book. A series of deadly encounters with an IRA splinter group had brought him to the attention of the CIA's Deputy Director, Vice Admiral James Greer-as well as his counterpart with the British SIS, Sir Basil Charleston-and when Greer asked him if he wanted to come aboard as a freelance analyst, Jack was quick to accept. The opportunity was irresistible, and he was sure he could fit it in with the rest of his work.

And then Jack forgot all about the rest of his work, because one of his first assignments was to help debrief a high-level Soviet defector, and the defector told an amazing tale: Top Soviet officials, including Yuri Andropov, were planning to assassinate the Pope, John Paul II.

I would too, but there are like 60 people waiting for it at my library and only one or two copies. Anyways, I went to B&N today and read the prologue, sounds good. Anyone finished the book and care to give their thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Anyone read this? I'm wary after the horror that was Bear and the Dragon.

I hear you man. I am either gonna borrow it from someone or wait for the paperback to show up in a used book store.

I've liked most of Clancy's books are entertaining reading, but this one didn't do much for me.

Spoiler:
The problem with this book is that nothing happens. There is a plan devised to get a defector out, and it works perfectly. That's the problem with a story in between others in the timeline ... nothing major can happen that would affect the already existing narrative (and history).

Also, Clancy is too cute with his little time references. Jack Ryan is a genius invester, so of course there are mentions of him getting in on the ground floor of Starbucks, etc. He also repeats himself constantly, passage after passage saying the same thing about how bad communism is, how bad socialized medicine is, and so on. I'm not saying I disagree with these statements, it is just that they are made with the subtlety of a sledge hammer.

All in all, definately not a recommendation for this one.

Hmm...I read about the first 50 pages, and it's okay so far. I'll probably finish it but it's not that great so far.

That's the thing ... I was just waiting for something in the story to grab me, and nothing really did.

I thought it was an excellent book(for the first 3/4) and then he totally disappointed me with how he ended it, because he built it up so greatly and then ended it so quickly, like he was tired of writing it. That made it his worst book, imo. I really hope he redeems himself with this one. I wish he would do another Rainbow Six book, does anyone know if one is in the works?

I am currently on page 160something and this book has been a snoozefest. I can only manage to get about 15 pages read before I am drifting off to sleep. I normally read a book every other day, this one is going to take me a month

I liked Bear & Dragon but this one is not in the same vein. It is hard to really care about the characters and it's not that fast paced.
