Questions for serious book collectors
To make a long question short, I'm basically wanting to expand my book collecting to include more first time authors. However, all I currently do is hope to run into one at B&N.
What are good ways to find first time authors? Are there lists or reviews available at a centralized location?
Also, I've noticed many of my favorite first timers are being published in the UK first. By the time the book is published here in the US, the UK edition is selling for $50+.
Are there ways to locate up and comers in the US as well as overseas and in Canada?
Any tips would be appreciated.

Subscribe to the New York Times Book Review, New York Review of Books, and the (London) Times Literary Supplement. They're the most influential reviewers, and can make or break a book. If you don't want to subscribe, go to your local library reading room. Publisher's Weekly review almost all books, but since it's a trade publication, it's more interested in how well a book will sell.
