There are a ton of good books written about Pearl Harbor and the start of WWII in the Pacific.
My recommendation: AND I WAS THERE - by Edwin T. Layton.
Layton was the fleet intelligence officer under Admiral Kimmel & Admiral Nimitz. A long time member of Naval Intelligence, Layton had wideranging connections and detailed knowledge of all the goings on in the intelligence community. Layton reveals a lot of the behind the scenes drama (and backstabbing) that went on. He tells of the infighting between Washington and Pearl Harbor that occurred, and the determination of some in the intelligence community to advance their careers at the expense of the national interest.
The book covers a lot of ground before Pearl Harbor, through the attack, and also all the drama of Midway.
Highly recommended if you want an insiders view of what occurred in this important period of American (and World) History.
