What a theme of death that is coming up very strong in parts of this chapter. What are you all thinking of this? Are you starting to see a lot in Eggers that you really like? I'm beginning to get more into it than ever.

Is everyone doing alright keeping up with the reading?

Keyser here's a link to the discussion schedule.

As for myself I'm liking the book the more I read. In many parts it's like if you were to have some kind of device making a direct recording of your your thoughts, sometimes strange, sometimes disjointed and putting them down on paper raw & unedited. Don't know if that makes any sense or not, but that's the best I can describe it this late at night.

That makes sense to me. When I was took a writing class in college, the professor had us "free-write" for about 20 minutes each class. Sometimes my writing made no sense, and others it was crystal clear.

It's almost as if there is a method to the madness of AHWOSG.

It seems that Eggers is starting to expand on an overwhelming sense of protection for Toph. He is slipping into the father role pretty well. It's almost as if he always protected Toph in a role closer to father than brother.

There must be more opinions than this. Did our group shrink a lot? Are peoplle not this far yet? Just nothing to say about it?

Agreed. This group started with a bang, but now...

I wonder if folks gave up on the book itself or the whole "club" idea???

I'm close to finishing part 2. I agree with the observation about Eggers becoming Toph's "Father." It is quite obvious, actually. And a lot of the writing does seem to be less structured than before. As if these really are his late night scribblings unedited. Not literally, but you know what I mean. This being said, it is really keeping my interest now.

So far, what do you all think of the book? As I said before, I keep going back and forth between liking it a lot and it really bugging me. However, Part 2 was much more enjoyable (easier to get through) for me than Part 1.

Anyone else?

Are folks just having trouble getting through this particular book? It can be kind of a tough read at times.

It is a tough read, and I don't really like it. I put it down after about 200 pages, and haven't been able to get back to it(for a number of reasons, some not related to the book at all.)

I think I'm still ahead of the proposed reading for now, though.

I agree with others that it can be enjoyable/okay to read, then BanG--annoying.

I'm really enjoying it, and haven't posted about it, since I've read way ahead of the group.

As of this morning, I'm on pp. 190 or so......

I like it!

Verbal,
Go ahead and post! Talk about the parts you've already read. We need input!

I just finished Chapter II, and should be better able to keep up now that I finished another book I was also reading.

One interesting thing that I've noticed as I'm getting more into the book is that I find myself doing a play-by-play, Eggersish narration of my own life in my head. Has anyone else found themselves doing this?

It seems like everyone who is reading it comes and posts about what they have. It is sort of a small group, so I was thinking it might be ok just to put a general discussion. We can talk about stuff when we get to it.

It isn't really plot-driven so I doubt there are many huge spoilers. Do you think it'll be alright for me just to start a general discussion thread instead of discussions about the "parts"?

I for one enjoyed everything before part one, but everything afterward has been sort of a struggle to get through. I've been trying to catch up, so haven't been posting or anything.

Does it frustrate anyone else that Eggers does not use "he said", "I said", etc at the end of long discussions between 2 people.

This bugs the hell out of. I've had to start the whole conversation a couple times to figure out who the hell is talking.

That'd probably be ok I would think. I know I'm at page 290 right now. Probably finish it up this week sometime.

I really think he is doing that on purpose to show that it doesn't really matter who is saying what. Like with Toph is it hard to tell who is saying what because of how similiar they have become.

That is just my take on it.

I can agree with that Alyoshka. It makes more sense to me now.

Is it me or does Toph seem like a rocket scientist with some of his observations. Especially the discussion he and Eggers had in the bedroom.
