So I guess Nashville didn't get included in the sale?

It's the only title I wanted - outside of the titles I already own. Guess I'll wait for the next sale.

Yes, cause they are going to sit down and watch all 25 in a row.

People lead busy lives. Driving the 20 minutes to the store after getting off the train from work to save $20 (if the cashier stacks the coupons) vs ordering it online and having the boxset when I get home from work. I'll pay the extra $20 for the convenience of having it.

Any chance that Amazon will have the sale they had in December to compete?

Ok.

Sooooo when should I go to get the best deal on that Zatoichi set?

Cuz I want to go now but if there is some coupon to help out on it... I can... Wait for it. *disgruntled*

It doesn't come out until November 26. Hopefully there will be a coupon that week, so the earliest that you can get it in-store would be on Black Friday(unless you go to the store now and get a cashier to pre-order it for you and have it shipped to your address).

Are there any titles in the collection that are in danger of being yanked by Studio Canal?

If you have one of those rectangular TV's, some of these Criterions are in high definition. So definitely worth watching a few...

I'm in for Zatoichi, Slacker, and Thief if I can preorder it. And Zatoichi as long as we get some good coupons.

Ha. This is a forum that, over the past decade, has gone from one that was full of people who bought and watched Criterion films to one in which people fall over themselves to get all of the Resident Evil movies on Blu-Ray. One might say it's an evolution in taste profiles of the Blu-Ray consumer, I suspect it's more an indicator of how lower prices have made BD customers more excited to hoard a lot of current, loud, crap movies than spend relatively more money on quality cinema. Either way, it sucks.

Getting Zatoichi presents some challenges. It comes out on 11/26, and the sale ends on 12/2. It's unclear if there will be any coupons live during that window. In addition, I can't see stores getting more than one copy of the pricey set, regardless of the buzz on this thread. So, if the copy at your local is 'gone quick', you will need to special order and hope it comes in before the sale ends, AND hope there is still a live coupon. Even without a coupon, you will save $13 with membership. It's up to the individual to weigh cost vs. convenience.

I don't see what this has to do with his point.

Please people, lets not derail this thread and fill it up 10 more pages of personal opinions - lets post a deal when we see one and keep the thread on track. Thanks

Seems like coupons may not be allowed online, at least a few blus carry this disclaimer:
Note: This item does not qualify for coupons or promotional discounts unless expressly stated.

Even if coupons are released, BN might make the blus ineligible.

Coupons are routinely blocked online during the Criterion sale. In store it's YMMV.

I may be jumping the gun and getting overly paranoid, but has your Rossellini/Bergman set shipped? I got in on this same deal yesterday and received an order confirmation email and the "Your item is set to ship" one. It was supposed to ship today but hasn't yet.

I seem to recall another time when I took advantage of a pricing error and they basically just held the order indefinitely until I cancelled it.

Speaking of Studio Canal --
Ran, Contempt are $9.99
Grand Illusion and Obscure Object of Desire are $14.99

There's usually some good deals in the Art House 50% off sale that goes runs concurrent to the Criterion Collection one. I'm not sure if these deals are available in store, though.

It's been my experience (yeah, yeah, ymmv) in the past that if you speak kindly to the clerk on duty and get them to look up any criterion in the system (including pre-orders) they will work with you and get it ordered for free home delivery or in-store pick up at the sale price. I know some clerks can be dicks but so can some customers. Also just because one clerk doesn't work with you doesn't mean another one won't. Again, ymmv. Try hard not to be a douche.

Got a 20% off "your choice of any item"coupon in my email. In store or online. Ends 11/10. UGHHHHHHH. I went yesterday to see if there was anything I really wanted. Not really anything there. I can hold off of the few I did want.

ZATOICHI! I want that box set so bad

I ended up buying most of the individual HVE Zatoichi DVDs when they came out back in the day. Very limited extras, but most came with a unique poster of the cover art. I'm going to bite on the box set as I really love the movies and the extras may be pretty good.

Same here--for the early days of DVD, those were really nice packages, with the posters and the cards and nice liner notes. I watched Zatoichi 3 the other day though, and the picture is really pretty soft---this is going to be a worthwhile upgrade, I think. (also, the first two on DVD were non-anamorphic). IMO, this is the greatest series of martial arts movies ever made.

I spoken with managers at two different Barnes & Noble's and they both told me that the Zatoichi set is special order only and they won't be getting any in unless they are special ordered.

I ended up getting three more while I was there today:

The Uninvited
The Ballad of Narayama
Ministry of Fear.
