Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) $16.99 @ DD
FWIW, FYE will have the 2D version for $14.99 and the 3D version for $19.99(10% less if you're a Backstage member). I'm going to try and price match at Target.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) $16.99 @ DD
The way Paramount has sliced up the extras and scattered them across different retailers is an abomination. NO ONE SHOULD PURCHASE THIS RELEASE, OTHERWISE THEY WILL EXPAND THE PRACTICE TO FUTURE TITLES!!!! I'm not kidding. It doesn't matter if you liked the movie or not - if people buy deliberately truncated releases, then we'll get more and more of them and we ALL lose as customers!
Read The Digital Bits' review and this AICN article, "Are Retailer Exclusive Blu-rays the New Variant Comics Covers?" for the details of this terrible scheme. It was bad enough having to buy 3D versions to get ALL the extras like with Prometheus, but this takes the freaking cake: "In all seriousness, to get all of the extras theoretically worth having, you'd have to buy both the Best Buy and Target editions ($50+tax minimum), and to watch with the commentary on, you can only view it on a computer, since iTunes Extras does not work on iPads, iPhones, or AppleTV." This. Is. Madness. Don't support it. Don't bend over for it and thus screw everyone else in the process. Boycott gimped releases! |
Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) $16.99 @ DD
^I don't give a shit about extras so I am keeping my pre order intact.
|
Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) $16.99 @ DD
I care about extras, but not that much to boycott. The commentary is really the only thing that bothers me since I hate iTunes, but whatever. I'm still buying. Sorry.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) $16.99 @ DD
Already preordered. Got a movie ticket, used a free $5 BB cert, so it only ran me $10.
|
Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) $16.99 @ DD
Screw this. I'll buy it once when I can get it for $10. I'll buy the other versions when I can get them for $5. Maybe more if the extras are on separate discs, and I can sell-off the extra copies of the movie itself.
It is just amazing how Paramount bends ST fans over. But they keep taking it... Not me-- I don't own a single TV season of ST on disc because even the sale prices are highway robbery. |

Just how raw does a studio have to roger you before you won't still pay up for their half-packages?

One time, a few weeks ago, the TOS BDs get below $40 - and the previous low was $40 one time three years ago - and you think the prices are fine? Yeah, Amazon did TNG for $50 that week, but in general Star Trek prices have been higher than even HBO sets were and HBO doesn't even try to pull that crap anymore. On the other hand spreading content among different retailers is a crappy thing to do, and i dont like it, but still their choice. |

Most of the time when buying a Blu-ray, I've already seen the movie theatrically so for me the extras, especially on major effects pictures like this, are a prime consideration. I'll routinely watch the extras and shelve the movie. I HATED The Dark Knight Reloaded, but I bought the BD for cheap in order to see all the making-of stuff. I didn't hate Prometheus, but the supplements in the 3D edition were terrific and ran for hours. Same for Life of Pi (though I settled for the 2D version with most of the extras). Good supplements deepen the experience of the movie. Otherwise, we should just stream from Netflix or torrent things if all we want is to watch a movie. To strip away the commentary track - the most basic of extras which even the barebones Avengers DVD included with one other featurette - and put it on fraking iTunes is a slap to the very audience that would be the most interested in hearing what the makers did. "Hey folks, we know you've got that nice 60" HDTV with surround sound, but you'll need to get out your laptop to watch it with J.J.'s commentary. While you're at it, call me Mister Daddy when I smack your ass. That'd be great." I don't get the snotty rudeness of the people who don't care about extras. It's like someone raising the alarm about a dog-fighting operation and sniffing, "Who cares? I like cats." What I REALLY don't get are the people who murmur that this is a lousy thing, but then grab their ankles and allow Paramount direct access to their Jeffries Tube. If you bend over for this, you're gonna keep getting bent over because you've signaled you like it when Paramount treats you that way. |

That said, this title will just be rental for me, as I was completed underwhelmed by the first Abrams Star Trek (and I shudder to think about what he's gonna do to Star Wars). But I agree with those who call for a boycott, this splitting of bonus features is getting out of hand. And the commentary only on iTunes is a big FU to those who purchase physical media. |

Another point made of "don't buy it" was spot-on; that was my point: I don't buy them. But it's a shame. I'm an interested admirer of the franchise who has seen most of the episodes (between all series) and all the movies, but I could probably be a fan if I could sit-down and enjoy the totality of the franchise by watching these shows when I want to. Some of these series are decades old. I appreciate the time and money to remaster them, but for the price to rarely drop years after the release? I can't imagine there is a ten-year projection to break even. I'd guess after a short time, the costs to remaster have been recouped. I'm not saying they should give them away, but how many people don't buy them because they're so expensive? How many fans is this franchise not gaining because of cost? They have a new, exciting "take" (love it or not) on Star Trek where it'd be easy for people to jump-on, but Paramount is taking the Big Two comic book approach: milking long-time fans more and more while the fanbase gets less and less. |

They are obviously happy "enough" with their pricing structure on the Star Trek series sets, or they would make the price lower. Duh!!! |

Target release: ■The Voyage Begins... The only real difference is that movies aren't released every month like comics, but I know this exclusive thing has really drained my resources. I've cut back alot (though not totally). |

People do realize most of these extra features are worthless for the most part, right? Most can be seen once on YouTube and quickly forgotten.

Missing in the coverage about this is what J.J. Abrams has to say about this; has anyone queried him? Yeah, he's busy prepping Star Wars, but he can make time to yes-or-no answer, "Do you approve of the extras being scattered across multiple retailers requiring fans to by multiple copies?"
I used to be a big Foo Fighters fan - I repeat, USED TO BE - when Sony slathered their rootkit DRM on one of their releases. That Mr. Punk Rock, Mr. Indie Cred, Mr. I Was The Drummer In Nirvana didn't step up and demand this crap not be put on his record indicated he hated his paying customers as much as the label did or he'd rather bend over for The Man than anger them for opposing their anti-customer tactics.

I fail to see how this is new. Music artists occasionally release albums where diffreentstores have different bonus tracks. I don't recall much "OMG, if the songs are recorded, every song must be on every album" outcry.

That said, while I put Into Darkness on my birthday wish list, if I don't get it in a few weeks I'll hold off to see if they put out a special edition. It's not like its a great movie to begin with! |

Not crazy about this practice with the extras, especially the iTunes commentary issue, but I went ahead and dropped a pre-order at that inexpensive price. Picked up STID and the UK imports of Pontypool and Sense & Sensibility for ~$34 shipped after the 10% coupon.

I already said I think it sucks that they are splitting the extras across different retailers. It doesn't bother me enough to not purchase the movie, and that is my choice. As far as bitching about pricing of movies or cars or houses or whatthefuckever, any private or publically held company in this country can run their business any way they see fit as long as they are not breaking any laws. If they wanna charge $100 for a box set or $1000 for a box set that is the company's choice. They will reach a price point where enough people (including myself) will not pay that premium. Said company will decide that they would rather sell more at a lower price or sell fewer at a higher price. Pretty simple economics. Or so it seems. They certainly don't have to lower the price because some guys on a bargain message board really, really want it, but don't wanna pay that much. Unbelievable. Seriously dude. Get a grip. It is a Blu-ray disc. |
Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) $16.99 @ DD
I already heard some rumors about JJ Abrams next Star Wars movie. It starts off with Han Solo's and Leia's child Jojo discovering a wormhole and going back in time before Anakin became Darth Vader. Jojo prevents Anakin from switching to the dark side and then accidentally causes an Imperial attack on Tatooine which destroys it completely (using a drop of grey matter that Tarkin's scientists invented) killing Luke Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi and Jabba before any of them even meet (not to mention lots of innocent Javas). There are lots of explosions and fighting, but in the end Han Solo becomes a drunken bum while Anakin become the ruler of the galaxy as a benevolent dictator with his new friend Jojo.
Which beloved franchise will JJ Abrams reboot next with a little time travel and kill off and alter most of the characters' destinies? Aliens? Indiana Jones? Nothing is safe. |
