Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save 4/21/13 - 5/11/13

Well, I went in today for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek: The Final Frontier. Tried to look them up online, but they were pre-order and wouldn't let me see if the store I shop in had them. So, went to the end cap and it was almost empty, mostly filled with the new seasons of ST:TNG. Went to the shelves. Nothing.

On my way out, I ran into someone who worked there (he was in a black shirt, so not sure if he was a manager or a specialist for the phones or something but definitely not a regular blue shirt), I asked just in case they had some in back. He took the time to look them up, go to the back to see if they'd come in and weren't put out. He then brought me over to CS and had them Express Lane them to my house (I know they aren't supposed to do this-he didn't, but another employee did but he didn't care) with the discount. So, I've very pleased. Best service I've had in a LONG time at Best Buy-actually last week it was the complete opposite.

Hope this continues!

Trade-In was no issue and I picked up the only title I wanted during this sale, Silver Linings Playbook.

Went to a slightly more out of the way store today to see if they had the Sandlot, Goonies, or even Fletch. Came out empty handed, but I'm trying to figure out what BBY is doing with their stock. They had none of the movies I was looking for, but looked like they got new stock of Clockwork Orange because they had about 15 copies (Good film that I own, but is it really in that high of demand?)

A question for those getting "Moulin Rouge" : Do you know if the double-feature Moulin Rouge/Romeo & Juliette has all the extras that the stand-alone movie has? BB.com has the double-feature on blu for $11.99 (but I haven't see it in store yet). Thanks!

Can someone please confirm if the Slingblade has the extras that the standalone version has?

That's the thing, they have like 30 copies of one particular title and zero of other catalog titles. My BB had like 20 copies of the Raid when I went a few weeks ago. The only good thing about that is I can wait for a while to purchase that film.

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save 4/21/13 - 5/11/13

I traded in 4 movies yesterday but didn't find much of anything I wanted or didn't already have. There are several Van Damme movies I want on Blu and my BB has none of them at all. They're all available at BB online however. Now I know you're not supposed to be able to use these $5 coupons online, but I called their customer service number just to ask about it, and the rep told me I could go to the store and have them place an order for all the items I wanted and that they could apply the discount there and I could come pick them up at the store when they arrived.

This sounds to good to be true, and I've debated going in because I doubt they'll actually do it or it will end up being an hour long fiasco. Has anyone tried this before?

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save 4/21/13 - 5/11/13

A WONDERFUL experience.

Went in with 4 DVDs. Clerk let me get the Blu-rays FIRST to ensure I could use all them for the upgrade!! One of the employees bent over backwards to find 2 that I was looking for. She must have spent at least 10 solid minutes (maybe more) looking everywhere!

I eventually settled on 3 and took them to the customer service desk. No coupons! ONe didn't scan - seemed it was on sale for $7.99.

No problem - I took one of the DVDs back. Got 2 great movies for $10 and traded in 2 $1 movies from the dollar store (Both which I actually watched and enjoyed, btw.. not a buy just to upgrade. but glad I unloaded them).

Everybody was so friendly. Greet, helper, service desk.. I actually felt they ENJOYED their job!

At one point when we were looking for the specific titles, I made a somewhat negative comment about how the same title wound up in some strange categories (e.g. horror film in action section, etc.). She explained that they outsource the setting up of the displays so they (the employees) can have more time helping customers like me!

She said this so sweetly with such a great smile on her face.. well, it made me smile.

I am not sure what is happening, but this is the second Best Buy where I have had multiple employees bend over backwards to make me a satisfied customer - all doing it with a smile on their face.

Something is going on... and I think its great.

Oh, I got Raid:redemption and The Town for $10. trading in 2 $1 DVDs. with great service.

A really great experience - and I didn't even get all the ones I wanted.

What a difference attitudes in workers can do... treated differently, I may have come out of the experience frustrated that I only found 2 of the 4 movies I wanted. Instead, I came out happy..

Thought I would share!!!

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save 4/21/13 - 5/11/13

Has anyone been able to use a manufacturer's coupon on an Express Lane order with the $5 U&S coupon? I recently tried and while this employee said he would do the $5 U&S (apparently by manually overriding the price), he said he didn't know how or where to apply the manufacturer's coupon on Express Lane. Anyone know if it's possible on Express Lane?

Regarding Steve's story, let me say this... last night I had a great experience at BB too with a very nice employee at a store I usually don't visit. However, those great experiences are cancelled out by consistently bad experiences at my nearby (i.e. convenient) store. So in the end my opinion at BB can never rise above "mixed and YMMV". Sometimes great, sometimes awful. I wish there were a trend that service is improving but I think it all depends on the employee you get and how (over)bearing the supervisors/managers on duty are. At my problem store 1 employee told me the managers "went through the receipts" at the end of the day and would complain if they did anything like override a price to combine a PM + U&S. At other stores you have managers who don't micro-analyze everything and don't tell their employees to deny whenever possible or call over a supervisor to deny. I just wish I could swap the locations of my bad and cool store so I don't have to drive out of my way to have the kind of experience at BB I ought to have.

^ Retail is a mixed bag and customer service isn't what it used to be. However, we shouldn't blame employees who enforce the rules as poor in providing customer service.

I travel quite a bit and it allows me to frequent Best Buys in other areas. It seems as though there are just areas with well-run stores and some that tend to have poor service. I recall visiting the only Best Buy in Meridian, MS for an iPad charger cable and a couple of blu-rays and it being a pleasant experience. Same experience in Surprise/NW Phoenix. I have to travel through Baytown, TX and that store is usually the epitome of incompetence. It all just depends on location.

Even with good experiences you somehow find a way to complain about your bad experiences. Seriously, we get it. No need to reiterate your feelings about Best Buy so often.

This is the same at my store. Last time, I traded in 4 DVDs and never used the coupons. They were all DVDs I had re-bought on blu-ray so no great loss.

It seems to me Best Buy doesn't have long to live. A couple years.

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save 4/21/13 - 5/11/13

I outsmarted myself last night. When I walked in, there wasn't a line at customer service so I thought I'd just trade in my dvd's and get the coupons so I could just go through the register when/if I found a blu-ray title to use it on.

Unfortunately, "no-line" still meant someone was already being helped and that took a full 15 minutes. So, when I finally get my turn at the counter I tell the lady that I want to trade in my dvd's for U & S coupons and she won't let me do it. Says they don't give out coupons they just do an exchange. I tell her they've always done coupons and I may not be getting anything this time and just want the coupons for when I do find something. We go back and forth and she just won't do it.

So, I go back and find a blu and on the way back, talk to the BB Sentry at the front door to see what the actual verbiage is on the U & S deal. She pulls out the ad and in big red letters it reads "trade in your old dvd and get a coupon for...". I tell her what I've already dealt with at CS with the Geek Squad "expert", thinking she might call a manager for me or go over to CS and straighten things out but all I get is a blank stare. I know I was expecting too much but I thought she would at least be apologetic in her passing of the buck. But nothing.

So, I go back to CS(now I'm 5th in line and get to wait again) to do my 1 disc trade and thankfully get a different black shirt. I point to my stack and tell him that I only have 1 trade but want the coupons for the other 4. He basically says the same thing, that they don't give out coupons because they can be copied. I'm too tired to fight it at this point so I just say okay. But my BB credit card, which I've used too many times to count, now isn't being accepted for some reason.

I know there's a balance available and I call and let him listen to the automated information saying that there's a balance. He asks if my card has been activated and I tell him I've used it many times so I guess it must be. I've had it for over a year. My point being, instead of getting on the phone with BB MC and finding out what's going on, he's trying to get me to pay with something else. Which led me to new resolve and I made him make a phone call. Come to find out, it was my mistake because the CC actually hadn't been activated which I still can't figure out, but it was a simple deal to fix and they were able to use the card.

And the punch line of the story? As I'm on the phone with the MC rep, he scans the remaining 4 dvd's I brought in, I assume taking pity on me or feeling guilty or something, and gives me the coupons I asked for in the first place!

And, just to end on a high note, I picked up the Star Trek Movie box set which is on sale for $39.99, down to $34.99 w/coupon. I have to go back and pick up the STNG movie set next time.

I was surprised the other day - I went it, no line at customer service, just gave them my dvds and she gave me the coupons (she didn't even open up the cases on the dvds).

Yes. Fox uses the same discs when they make their double/triple features.

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save 4/21/13 - 5/11/13

Your story sounds a lot like my story from a page or so prior. Where are they getting this "We can't hand out coupons" nonsense? Why would they even print up books of non-unique coupons if not to hand them out with the promotion. If it was truly a CS only transaction it would be one code that they scan or type in at the counter. No coupons printed at all. I asked Best Buy to contact me back when I gave the CS a poor survey, but as of now I have not heard anything back.

Why would you want the coupons if you don't know that you'll find anything later? I prefer the couponless trade/buy in one transaction.

That's good to know. Does the same apply to Miramax (Slingblade as part of Slingblade/MonBall combo)?
