The only thing they have restrictions on are the TVs, computers, cameras and the like, and those are spelled out very clearly. Yeah, that's the company policy. You'll occasionally get someone working there that tries to do things there way but all you have to do is point to the policy board they have behind them and/or ask for a supervisor.

I had one experience like this where I heard the guy saying, "In a case like this, here's what I do". When he tried to tell me that, I got to explain to him that that may be his policy but we're at Costco and we're going by the policy they say. I don't normally act like a dick like that but when they say they're going to do things their way and not the store's way, I'm not going to go along with that.

Yes, I have bad luck sometimes. Maybe later I'll post what happened about my denied returns several years ago. For now I have a question:

I'm not a Costco member of course, but I'd like to get the Twilight Zone Blu-Ray set for $120. I got a Costco cash card and I was told it allows you to buy stuff without a penalty or fee without a membership. You can pay the remainder in cash. If I use a Costco cash card as a non-member, will I be able to get Twilight Zone for $120? In other words, is $120 the normal in store price right now or is it a special members only discount on top of the normal price?

Gobear 12-16-12 02:10 PM

You have to have a Costco membership to shop there or go with someone who is a member.

Costco cash cards can be used by members and non-members.

You only have to be a member to buy or reload the card.

Andicus is right (otherwise I wouldn't even attempt to go). I only recently found out about this loophole too. My question still remains:

Is the $120 price on The Twilight Zone Blu-Ray set the current normal price for anyone buying at Costco or is it a special discount on top of the normal price?

Though nobody said so, this thread gave me the impression that this might not be the normal price but some special discount. While I'm confident the Costco Cash Card lets you get normal Costco prices, I'm not sure about "special" Costco prices... hence my question before I go.

Even when I bought stuff back during their "forever" policy that they kept touting to me, I didn't return anything before the policy change (in 2008?) because I didn't hear about it in time. I remember reading that prior purchases would be grandfathered, but the few times I tried to return something significant (more than $50) after the policy change they effectively told me to "dream on". It didn't matter that I had bought under the prior policy. On top of that you have to retain a current Costco membership to return anything. So I consider Costco a store that doesn't honor their own prior policies and can't be trusted.

You either got a rogue employee or you're confusing some details. When the return policy changed, it just limited specific electronics to 90-day returns for refund. All other items continued to be returnable for refund no matter when they were purchased. A specific price point has never been part of the return policy as you're suggesting. I've returned a $100 item that was purchased three years prior for a full refund with no problem at all. The return policy is very clearly stated and if it wasn't honored as stated, then the customer service rep you dealt with was wrong.

While I don't doubt you may have had an isolated bad experience, what you've decided about Costco is simply not true, nor is it consistent with the overwhelming majority of members who renew every year. There's a reason they have the lowest membership turnover among warehouse stores and the lowest employee turnover in retail. And no, I don't work for Costco. I'm just a fan.

The $120 price rings up when the item is scanned at check out. The thing is they scan your membership card at check out before they scan the items you are buying. If it is true that you can enter a store and use a gift card to buy at Costco without a membership card , then you should be able to buy the blu ray.
I thought gift cards without membership were only good at Costco.com but I certainly could be incorrect. On the other hand I recall people asking for items to be scanned prior to purchase because they had been told on these boards that there was an instant discount and there were no signs in their store. The items scanned did not show the discount. It turned out you had to buy the item in order for the discount to show up. Whether this was because a membership card wasn't scanned first, I have no idea.

Re: Costco instant discounts OMG

If it is the case that you didn't get the discount without a membership card, you could probably get someone in line to scan theirs for you. As long as you are paying, it shouldn't matter.

Actually, shouldn't the card be associated with the member that purchased it?

I guess the best idea would be to call the store and ask about it.

The best idea is to buy a damn membership if you want the deals that members get.

If you aren't on the card or with the card holder they will call you out on it and tell you too bad.

I've seen it.

You could post your location and see if there is a local DVDTalker that would buy it for you with their Costco membership. I once bought a couple of Simpsons sets at Costco for another DVDTalker and arranged to meet him in the parking lot. Maybe you can work it out the same way.

Some Costco locations have gotten mildly strict on that behavior. Most of their profit comes from the membership dues and they don't want non-member freeloaders buying up merchandise most of the time. It's a minor problem in the more urban areas where an office worker will take his fellow non-member office workers at lunch to Costco. I've actually seen people denied from buying something.

I was referring to buying goods from inside the store. The food areas at the front are always packed with non-Costco members that slip into the store for the cheap lunch prices.

What do they care about who buys their cheap food ? Junk food at best...you've seen the size of the patrons that are munching away on those pizza slices and downing gallons of endless coke...Costco ought to be castigated for encouraging such an irresponsible eating fare

There are two Costco's where I live and the newest one has their food court outside where anyone and everyone is welcome to buy food. My guess is that Costco doesn't really care who buys the food.

Here are a few items that I noticed at the "Brookhaven" Costco in Atlanta yesterday. Although the stickers on each item had "regular" pricing, the display tables had Instant Savings price cards, which reflected "discount" pricing.

I don't recall prices for some of the items, but those that I remember are noted below. All are Blu-ray unless otherwise noted:

Twilight Zone Complete Collection: $119.99
Lawrence of Arabia 50th Anniversary Edition: ???
Warner Brothers Gangster Collection Vol 1 (DVD):$9.99
Tarantino XX: 8-Film Quentin Tarantino Collection: ???
Dragon Tattoo Trilogy: ???
Matrix Collection: ???
Harry Potter Wizard's Collection: $299.99
Steve McQueen Collection (DVD):$9.99
Marx Brother's Collection - Green Box (DVD)$9.99
Bugsby Berkeley Collection (DVD) $9.99
Forever Marilyn:???
Joan Crawford Collection (DVD):$9.99
Bogart & Bacall Collection (DVD):$9.99
Jaws - Universal 100 Anniv Version: $9.99

There were many more titles - I just can't remember them all. Prices are valid until 12/24.

See the Costco DVD thread for some Fox box sets for $10.99 each on some movie classics.

I doubt it. The DVD collection has only dropped just under $100 only 4 times in the last 4 years. Now if it was dropping to around $50, then I could see the blu-ray set going to $100 but that won't be anytime soon.

Are any of these discounts variable by location? I picked up Forever Marilyn and the Dirty Harry set for the prices mentioned above, but the Harry Potter set didn't register any discount. They even looked it up on their computer and couldn't find any sort of discount available for it (just the marked price of $49.99). Still a good price, but an extra $10 off would have been quite welcome. Any knowledge out there? (This was at the Colma store just south of San Francisco, for what it's worth.)

I believe the Lawrence of Arabia collector's set is $49.99.

However, it can be purchased for under $40 currently at Barnes & Noble during their 40% off all BD's sale (through 12/24) if:
-you have a membership (gives extra 10% off)
-you have a 25% or 30% off coupon (sent out by email)
-they have it in stock
I believe it works out to be something like $36+ or $38+ pre-tax, depending on whether you have a 25% or 30% coupon.

Regarding TZ, I bought the BD set for $120 + tax because it had such rave reviews on how improved the PQ was over the DVDs. I had bought all of the DVD sets from Deep Discount (years ago back when they had a good reputation) for about $90 and just opened the first one. I was able to trade them all in to Amazon for $82, so the difference for the BDs was $38 + tax on the entire $120. Maybe I shouldn't have done it. Who knows. I just hope the BD sets really are THAT much better than the DVD ones which I never watched.

There were several at my store on Sunday. It rang up at $39.99 too, but I debated at the register and decided not to get it since I already owned 4 out of 8 Potter movies on BD. I was able to get Goblet of Fire and Azkaban for $3.96 from Walmart on BF (they didn't have any other Potter BDs but apparently other Walmarts had all 8 Potter BDs individually for that price). So I just need the first 2 now. I'll keep waiting. Sets always seem to come out after I already own too many of the movies to make the set worthwhile.

It was $39.99 at my Costco (on Sunday I think), so I doubt anyone has an explanation why your store was different. I always thought all Costcos were the same, but I'm far from an expert as I'm not even a member.

As several people have mentioned the instant off doesn't show up unless you actual purchase the item. If you just ask them to scan the item to check the price the instant off will not show.

Did you buy it on the 27th? If so, perhaps, as with Dick Van Dyke, the rebates are good thru 1/6/13. Most of the titles, except maybe Harry Potter and Lawrence, are sold out at my store anyway.
