Thanks OP!

There are a good handful of titles I want there.

That's a fantastic price for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Not sure if I'm going to the store for just one title, definitely some good stuff in there.

Never done a Black Friday at the store before. I understand it varies depending on your area, but how quickly do the blu-rays / DVDs go? I would guess the stuff that goes the quickest is the more expensive electronics.

Will probably grab Captain America and Thor at that price.

Need Captain America, Thor, and maybe Underworld Awakening.

Wish POTC: On Stranger Tides was on the list.

You're right, it's the electronics stuff that people go crazy over.

Last year, Walmart did a staggered roll-out of BF bargains. Some BF prices were available at midnight, some at 5 AM, some at 8 AM (or something like that). At my Walmart, this really helped with the crowds. I believe Blu-rays were available at midnight, avoiding some of the craziness over the bigger ticket items which were later, and it was easy to get the movies I wanted.

Edit: I just looked at the BF ad this year, and it looks like the Movies start at 8 PM on Thanksgiving, and the crazy Electronics start at 10 PM, so you have 2 hours (or less) to try to avoid the madness.

Hopefully these will be available online or Amazon will price match. There is no way I will step foot in a Walmart anywhere from Thanksgiving - Christmas. Not worth getting trampled to death over some deals no matter how good they are.

Is that version of Rise of the Planet of the Apes missing any features?

Depends on the store, but I've been into places like Target and Best Buy on Black Friday afternoon and found some of the deals still available. I don't know that I'd stand in line for these, but I wouldn't wait until noon on Friday to go get them either.

Meh.

Re: WalMart Black Friday Ad 2012

Some good deals, but they are all on the 2D versions of things like The Lorax, Captain American and Thor. I haven't seen any 3D BDs listed in any BF ads yet. Apparently 3D BDs are still considered obscure and not mainstream.

What I think about the lack of 3D BDs in the BF ads can be summed up by quoting an Elton John song: "It's sad, so sad, so sad. It's a sad sad situation, and it's getting more and more absurd".

Some good prices on movies that I've been waiting for a good drop on... I'll be picking up about 6 or 7 of them

Fuck, I just bought Last of Mohicans for 10 bucks and Captain America for $15.

Definitely getting Apes and 21 Jump Street.

Brave and M3 for me, hopefully Amazon matches.

A question regarding Amazon matching BF deals... do they only match until stock on hand is gone or all day?

Usually unitl 11 am or 1 pm -- whatever time the ads say the doorbusters end. Also, many of these BD deals will end up as Liightning Deals during BF week. I can't remember (because I actually went to WM), but I think some of these were active on WM.com.

3 years ago I went and just picked up the DVDs I wanted and left. Last year there was a crowd around the BDs/DVDs and a mad rush when the displays were opened. Some grabbing handfuls of the same title to resell. In the words of Charlton Heston: "It;'s a madhouse ..."

Some of their classic/catalog store exclusives like the Marilyns, the Bonds, Mad,Mad World, Porky's, Fish Called Wanda etc. Would've been nice.

Surprisingly the Walmart crowd isn't looking for criterion collection films. Walmart is just about the definition of mainstream. Loss leaders should be as mainstream as possible.

Re: WalMart Black Friday Ad 2012

A couple of years ago my g/f and I tried going to Wallyworld when they did good Midnight deals and when we got there, the place was a madhouse, the displays were decimated and nothing good was left, and it was so crowded that she had a panic attack (which she NEVER does) and had to run outside. Even if there was something left to pick up, it looked like it'd take an hour to check out. FTS. Never again. Not going through that grief to save a buck on a movie.

Exactly, your not going to get Criterions and catalogue titles on Black Friday. People want new releases or stuff that was released this year.

what would happen if someone slipped Captain America into your collection? would you have to rebuy the ones it touched? Would you lose hipster cred when your friends saw it?

There's some decent stuff there. I wouldn't mind picking up The Adventures of Tin Tin and We Bought a Zoo for $8.96. Also will probably get Die Another Day since it's dirt cheap. It'd be nice if some of the other Bond films are that price.

That and you would get the biggest WTF? face from those people if you spoke the words Criterion or catalogue to them. They would wonder what exactly you even meant, especially Criterion.

I dunno. There are several Criterion titles that are fullscreen. Of course, at a $40 pricepoint, that kinda breaks the Wally Wallet and you'd get quite a few chuckles and tobacky in your face.

In any case, I'd rather buy 10 titles @ $4 a piece on BF, than one over-priced-even-during-a-50%-OFF-sale Criterion title. I'm not THAT into movies.

I'm quite puzzled as to what Criterions has to do with this thread?
