Best Buy Upgrade & Save, Jan 8 - Jan 28, 2012

Since this is a multi-week event, I figured it'd be good to give it its own thread.

Post your deals and finds below!

$5 Upgrade & Save Coupon:

Bring in your original DVD (no burned copies accepted) with the original case to Customer Service and receive a $5-off coupon valid on any Blu-ray movie priced $9.99 and up. Excludes Blu-ray music titles. See a Customer Specialist or visit BestBuy.com/upgradeandsave for more details about the Upgrade & Save promotion. Limit 5 coupons per trip. A recycling receipt must accompany the coupon at time of redemption. Once you have received your coupon, if you do not find a Blu-ray, you are unable to get your turned-in DVD back. Not valid with any other discount or package. Markdown taken from original price. Your original DVD must have been commercially packed and with the original case. Adult content DVDs not accepted. Not valid with any other offer. Valid on in-stock Blu-ray movies only. No cash value. Offer valid 1/8/12 - 1/28/12.
Frequently asked questions:

Q. What kind of DVD's can I trade in for a coupon?
A. Any commercial DVD (excluding porn) with the original DVD disc and original artwork/case (with UPC code) can be traded in for a coupon.

Q. Do I have to use the coupon on the same title as the DVD that I traded in?
A. No! You can use the coupon for ANY Blu-ray title $9.99 or over (excluding music and concert BD's).

Q. Can I use the coupon on Blu-ray titles that are on sale?
A. Although the terms of the promotion say "Markdown taken from original price", this has never actually been enforced by the Best Buy point of sale system. You should be able to use this coupon on any Blu-ray title, and the $5 discount will come off of the price that rings up at the register (sale or not).

Q. Do I have to use the upgrade coupon immediately?
A. No, if you can't find anything you want right now, you can simply hold onto it and use your coupon later. The coupon is good until 1/28/12.

So there is a specific list or all titles 9.99 and up?

Any idea how long the $5 coupon is good for after you get it?

Based on the wording of the text, it says "any" Blu-ray disc. However, the graphic above says "list of qualifying titles".

I guess we won't find out until Sunday when the URL is active, or until we see the terms on an actual coupon. If it has the "any disc" wording on the coupon, then I think we should be good to go.

It should be noted that they won't take any porn DVDs in case anyone were thinking of offloading

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save, Jan 8 - Jan 28, 2012

I'm guessing the Upgrade and Save pic above is just a left over from previous sales where there was a list of "qualifying titles".

These are the ones listed in the ad thread, including new releases for that week. So I'm thinking the "any" blu-ray will be applicable.

$4.99 Blu-ray ($9.99 minus $5 Upgrade & Save coupon):
•Knocked Up (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Casino
•Braveheart
•Rocky

$9.99 Blu-ray ($14.99 minus $5 Upgrade & Save coupon):
•The Dark Knight
•Scarface (includes Digital Copy)
•Due Date (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•The Town (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Our Idiot Brother

$12.99 Blu-ray ($17.99 minus $5 Upgrade & Save coupon):
•The Debt
•Rise of the Planet of the Apes (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Mr. Popper's Penguins (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Warrior (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Cowboys & Aliens (includes DVD and Digital Copy)

$14.99 Blu-ray ($19.99 minus $5 Upgrade & Save coupon):
•Killer Elite (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•What's Your Number? (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Moneyball
•Green Lantern
•Avatar (includes DVD)
•The Fighter (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
•The Help (includes DVD)
•Fright Night (includes DVD)
•Friends With Benefits (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Super 8 (includes DVD and Digital Copy)

$19.99 Blu-ray ($24.99 minus $5 Upgrade & Save coupon):
•Moneyball (includes DVD)
•Kung Fu Panda 2 (includes DVD and Digital Copy)
•Dolphin Tale (includes DVD and UltraViolet Digital Copy)

$24.99 Blu-ray ($29.99 minus $5 Upgrade & Save coupon):
•Bambi
•Alice in Wonderland

$29.99 Blu-ray ($34.99 minus $5 Upgrade & Save coupon):
•Boardwalk Empire (includes bonus disc)
•Beauty and the Beast

Re: Best Buy Upgrade & Save, Jan 8 - Jan 28, 2012

If the mission impossible movies stay at $9.99 next week those will be good to pick up. 3 movies and 3 tickets for $14.97 is not bad. That is if you don't care about the lossy audio and omission of most of the extras on mi3.

For those who might need studio issued DVDs in their original cases, Dollar Tree has been getting in some $1.00 titles recently, and Big Lots may still have some $1.88 titles available (from a BF assortment).

It says Markdown taken from original price. I'm not sure they will take markdowns from the sale prices.

All 5 of the $9.99 titles above are sale prices, and the last time they had this it was also taken off of sale prices.

Can I take in three dvd's and get three $5 coupons in one transaction? There's a couple of BD's I wanna get. And if so, can I use all the coupons in one transaction or would I have to do three seperate ones?

They will take it from sale price, but the wording is misleading (or just flat wrong) and it's going to create more than a few headaches because the staff that is used to this kind of stuff will assume it's NOT off the sale price but the regular price.

It probably depends on the store and the clerk.

Some clerks will hold you to the letter of the terms of the deal, and if HD-DVD isn't mentioned, they won't let you do it. Others will.

The last time they did this, they took the $5 off of sale prices for me. Though it was difficult to get them to sell me the Avatar SE for $14.99 since the computer wouldn't deduct the $5 when she scanned it. She had to consult a printed list of titles and then had a manager take the $5 off manually. The Avatar SE was listed as one of the eligible titles on their website, but in-store, they had the regular Avatar blu-ray marked as eligible for the promotion.

I never got coupons, though. I took my DVDs to the customer service desk, and they told me to go pick out the specially marked blu-rays I wanted.

It depends on what title you get. For example. I purchased Smallville S10 BD on 11/29. It was on sale for 44.99. I bought 2 BDs because at the time it was buy $50 in BDs and get a $10 BB gift card. Well I didnt get the gift card because the system didnt have the SKU in their system. It turns out their prices are input by a 3rd party firm. Guy says it happens all the time. He calls corporate and is on the phone for 30 minutes. Meanwhile they can't find the store manager to override. Finally some Geek Squad guy comes over and tells cashier what the maneger said to do.

Cut to a week or so ago when Smallville went on sale for $25.00. Took em 15 minutes to price match because the SKU still hasn't been updated.

I'll be reporting back tomorrow as I have 4 DVDs I want to convert to BDs

I wonder if this guy's right http://seanreadsthenews.typepad.com/...gradually.html

Yeah, this all sounds like a headache that isn't worth the $5. I'm skipping it.

Don't skip it, it's worth more than if you Ebay it or sell it to Amazon. BTW, last time I went in the guy held the discs and told me to pick up what I wanted and bring them back. Seems logical.

Passed on this previously but may give it a try this time. I have a lot of stuff to do this weekend (and upcoming week), but I'm going to try to get to the store when it opens tomorrow and see how this goes.

The only time I had any problem was PM'ing stuff that was cheaper online, but they did it without too much hassle and got True Grit and Forrest Gump for 5 bucks each. Of course, YMMV, but my local BB has not denied me yet.

Something seems weird because The Departed is in there, and it's $7.99 which would make it ineligible, unless they plan on jacking up the price tomorrow.

EDIT: This list has to be wrong. Their own newspaper ad shows eligible titles that are not on that list.
