This is nothing new. All items priced 39.99 and up are discounted 10% in stores with the member discount taken off that price. The 50% off Criterion discount is taken from the list price of 39.99 not the discounted price which puts them at 19.99 before member discount.

I believe it's reverted to 50% off MSRP. So each title should be $19.99 I believe. I forget if they ring up as $19.99 or $20.00. I would have to check a past receipt. After membership discount it should be around $17.99. Add a potential 20% off coupon and the total comes to $14.39 before sales tax.

My membership was purchased at the end of January of this year. The $5 off $50 explicitly says it can only be used with a membership that was purchased from April 25, 2011 to June 29, 2011. I wonder if the system enforces that or the cashier. Maybe the cashier won't notice, unless the system prevents it. Same thing with the $8 off $40. The Criterions are typically $39.99 so this is a huge YMMV.

I am planning to get M [Blu-ray], Insignificance [Blu-ray], Yi Yi [Blu-ray], and Modern Times [Blu-ray]. Maybe I'll try to buy one with a potential x% off coupon and the 8$ off $40. If they let me use two coupons on one title I'll keep trying separate transactions until they say no. My Barnes & Noble is relatively close so multiple trips are not out of the question.

It's fun finding the best coupon combinations that yield the best deal.

The new $8 coupon was created specifically so it wouldn't work on the non box set Criterion titles. I tried to use one on a 39.99 title during the B2G1 sale and was refused. And this from a person who lets me use multiple coupons every sale. There's almost a zero chance of that coupon working on these 39.99/19.99 titles during the sale. I'm sure someone might get lucky and have a cashier accept one but it won't work for the majority.

As for the $5 off $50, the dates are irrelevant. The computer doesn't track it. I've used the $5 off for many different periods without an issue.

It was no coincidence the new DVD coupon was changed to a $40 purchase. It's obvious it was for the Criterion sale

So my best scenario would be to use one $5 off $50 coupon and another (let's assume) 20% off coupon if they have it, correct?

I have a membership so I'll get an additional 10% off. I want four movies.

Code:
(3 * $17.99) = $53.97.
(1 * $14.39) = $14.39.

($53.97 + $14.39) = $68.36 - $5.00 = $63.36
Add 6.25% sales tax, $67.32.
That's the best scenario for me you think?

Unless I do four separate transactions and try to use one of the 20% off coupons on each transaction:

Code:
(1 * $17.99 * 0.80) = $14.39.
(1 * $17.99 * 0.80) = $14.39.
(1 * $17.99 * 0.80) = $14.39.
(1 * $17.99 * 0.80) = $14.39.

$57.56 * 1.0625 = $61.16.
I would save a little over $6, but again it would be YMMV using the same coupon on four separate transactions when coupons typically state they can only be used once. I guess I could try that and if they shoot it down I'll just go with the first scenario. $16.83 per Criterion is still pretty decent.

FYI:

$39.99 (MSRP) * 0.50 (50% sale) = $19.99 * 0.90 (membership discount) = $17.99 * 0.80 (20% coupon) = $14.39.

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12

I decided to grab Kiss Me Deadly, Solaris and Diabolique with the Buy 2, get 1 Free promotion and the extra 10% off the entire purchase coupon(H3U4M7L). Going through e bates pretty much covers my sales tax. $50.38 for three titles($16.79 per title) is good enough for me. Saves multiple trips to the store, gas and worrying whether they'll take a coupon or not.

Are those membership prices or non-member? I let my (long-time) membership lapse after the last sale because I didn't really like the changes that B&N had made to the memberships (it just wasn't worth the money anymore). Just curious if the B2G1 is going to be better bang for my buck than the regular Criterion sale.

Non-member. I also let my membership lapse. BTW, this was an online order.

There is no difference in price for members vs. non-memebrs when buying online. Your membership gets you faster shipping but no discount.

"faster shipping" = slow boat to China.

Definitely true. B&N have nothing on amazon prime when it comes to shipping speed. My first online order after starting the free membership trial still took 2+ days just to get out the door (and this was before the holiday), which kind of negates the "faster" shipping speed.

Mainly took the trial for the CC sale, since I still want the additional 10% off, and that apparently won't work online anymore since they've made the AAA discount into a coupon anyone can use.

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12

I still have some receipts from last year's sale but I can't scan it. It rings up initially at $39.99 then after the 50% discount it goes down to $20.00. It looks like this:

(1 @ 39.99) PROMO New Price
(1 @ 20.00) Member Card 10% (2.00)
(1 @ 18.00) MBR Item Cpn $ (5.00)
(1 @ 13.00)

I used the $5. coupon on some $29.99 titles as well because it's the price before all discounts are applied. So, the $8 would be off of $40. It's really just a matter of one penny. If the titles ring up the same then they should allow the coupons. All the managers I spoke with agreed with me about the wording on this after several cashiers wouldn't put them through.

The key is this: 50% off of $39.99 is $19.995 or $20. which is half of $40 not $39.99.

I'm sure this will work somewhere. They were arguing on the 5 off 20 with the $40 titles for me saying it didn't work because the price is now $18.

Hell, I'd take regular Amazon super saving shipping over BN turtle style shipping. Ordered something on May 31 and it still hasn't arrived yet. It's been languishing in Richmond, CA since June 20.

I'd actually consider the B2G1 deal since e bates has now increased their BN cashback to 6%. Some recently released CC have been at $27.99 and with the 10% off total coupon it's close to the sale prices. The only thing you have to deal with it is the china boat style shipping.

Thanks, again. That's one of my reasons for dropping the membership. In the past, some coupons were members only, so my reference was more to the usage of coupons, etc. than anything else. I haven't been keeping up with the B&N thread much because I only shop there in July and November

Shipping has never been a big deal to me; my logic is, if I've waited this long, I can wait a little longer. If I need it immediately, I can pay the extra money.

Not to be a smart ass, but they're over-priced and I suspect their 50% off sale drops the price down to normal retail prices

Did B&N use DHL global mail? I recently had part of an order ship with DHL and it took 14 days to get delivered. I've been getting most orders within 5 to 6 days with free standard shipping without a membership. I have had better luck when B&N uses Argix. While not as fast as express shipping with a membership it's only a couple of days more.

Yup, it was the infamous DHL global mail/USPS combo. The only time I've gotten quick shipping with BN is when they use USPS priority. It gets out to me in Hawaii in around a week or so.

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12

Been gearing up for this one for a few weeks now... 50%+10%(Membership)+$5 dollar off coupon+8 dollar off coupon+b2g1 Free+ just bought a $120 gift card for $60 (and the giftcard just arrived in the mail). After all the savings i will be paying roughly 5.75 per criterion. (with the exception of the one box set i get, and yes i know this will be done in two transactions because of the two coupons.)

Monday will be a good day. Good luck to everyeone else as well.

How did you get a $120 gift card for $60?

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12

There are currently at least 7 titles that are $27.99 online at bn.com and eligible for B2G1. Combined with a 10% off total order coupon and 10% Discover cashback, this makes the effective price of each title $15 plus tax. That's close enough to the best-case-scenario price of $13 (and that's if coupons are accepted which is even more YMMV this time around) that I went ahead and ordered those now and reduced my wish list for the sale.

Re: Barnes and Noble 50% Off Criterion Sale 7/12

I don't know what I want to get. Probably end up getting nothing as I am not a member, and I don't buy enough there to make the membership worth it.

I have just been requesting items from the library instead, so i can actually see the movie before buying it. The Criterions have been so hit or miss for me and not much inbetween.
