I'm wondering if UE will let me preorder (and pay for) the January Criterions and use the coupon. So far, I've been able to pay for three titles this way, but I haven't tried preorders. Hmmm.

I've only used one coupon, still have 2 left though. I grabbed the Complete Lost series on Blu-ray and the Limited Edition Terminator 2 blu-ra endoskull replica on Sunday. They said they would probably get an email from corporate about allowing that purchase but thats not my problem.

It worked! Bought Micmacs and the preorder of Broadcast News (Criterion). I would say this is a rather large YMMV, however, as the clerk said, "Normally I'd say no, but I'll do it this time." Total: $27.95.

Re: The Ultimate Electronics BOGO Thread
Looks like these coupons (among other things) came around and bit UE in the ass. They filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday.
There are going to be some lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) customer's out there who may be able to get bargain's as they close stores.

not surprising really Mark Wattles (the major owner and CEO) is the same guy that drove Hollywood video into the ground.

Re: The Ultimate Electronics BOGO Thread
Wow. I didn't know. I just Googled and sure enough UE filed for bankruptcy. If memory serves, isn't this the second time they've done that? Frankly (if I had any extra money which I don't) I'd be hesitant enough to invest in any business that hadn't failed, especially a small retail chain, but after going bankrupt once I just can't imagine anyone investing in them again. I wonder if UE will come around for round 3 and people will still invest? I feel the same way about Kmart. I've gotten some good deals there (clearance mainly), but they have ridiculously high prices most of the time and fairly poor inventory. Kmart went bankrupt once (and somehow bought Sears), and I always wonder/worry that they'll go under again (and take Sears with them). I hope not, especially as I still have a big gift card with them.
Considering my UE never did the fabled remodel and never carried any of these BD deals I was so jealous of, I guess it's definitely not going to happen at my store now. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they close mine considering it's one of the few stores I visit where I can easily get waited on and don't see very many customers. Compare that to Walmart and BB where employees are scarce and I often have to search for several minutes to find one who is (begrudgingly) able to help me.
I'm glad on my last purchase from UE I didn't get their warranty but opted for Squaretrade instead. Or maybe the warranty would've been independent of UE.
Too bad about UE as I'd like the one near me to stay open for a little competition. With bankruptcy these days you never know if they'll close or stay open and keep going like nothing happened. Sometimes I think bankruptcy is just a fancy word for "let's screw our current bondholders and then get a new set of bondholders to screw later".
I didn't know that either. I only know his name because he likes to blab it on the UE commercials I hear on the radio. You'd think after 2 failures nobody would hire him again, but somehow I doubt it. My guess on the reason UE would fail is this... there are too many other (Internet) dealers with low prices to allow them to make much profit, especially as they have nicer than average stores (mine is) and a lot of employees to pay (unless they are all commissioned). Fry's usually has better prices, so most of the time I end up PM'ing UE to Fry's if I don't feel like driving, and lots of times UE has said "no, it's below cost" (like BB does). So obviously Fry's and Walmart are buying electronics cheaper than UE.

Re: The Ultimate Electronics BOGO Thread
Yep, this is the second time 'round. The filed Chapter 11 back in 2005. I believe some stores used to be called "SoundTrack", but were re-branded during the bankruptcy.
I'm pretty sure they won't close the one in Thornton, CO (it's the HQ), but for some cities, the places to get big-ticket electronics is getting scarce.
First, Circuit City. Now, UE. Best Buy and Walmart are pretty much the big box stores left (perhaps Target can count). I wish there were a "Fry's" in Colorado. I won't go to Best Buy, Walmart I only go for blu-rays.
It's funny, on the website, under "The Ultimate Story", is this highlight:
2010 - Ultimate Electronics returns to a state of growth

Re: The Ultimate Electronics BOGO Thread
That's a pretty crummy assessment. He built Hollywood and made it successful. He kept it alive for longer than it should have been, and most credit him personally with righting the company after he came back to day-to-day ops. His biggest mistake was to pay a fortune for reel.com well before online rental was on the radar. He sold for over a billion dollars, which is not too shabby for where B&M rental was heading.
I hope Ultimate makes it through this.

As for Mark Wattles, with his track record it's more that he is the harbinger of doom. Currently, if he invests in your company, you might as well start counting down to the end.
Remember, he was also involved with the destruction of Circuit City. (Although most of that was due to the DIVX contract debacle...)

Re: The Ultimate Electronics BOGO Thread
Well, they might survive. Wattles bought the company in 2005 via auction (when UE was in their first bankruptcy under a different owner), so one could argue that this is their first bankruptcy filing under his company, "Ultimate Acquisition Partners".
