$14.99 for Get Him to the Greek might have my attention. I'll probably pass with Black Friday deals going on after this sale. Thanks for posting, though!

Re: Bestbuy Blu-Ray Prices (November 21 - November 24)

Anyone want to hazard to guess whether How To Train Your Dragon will be lower during the BF deals online? So, not in stores, but a deal better than that where I can order from home, because we NEVER go to the stores.

Remember Me and She's Out Of My League seemed to get pretty good word of mouth, so I might bite. Assuming Amazon matches and I have to pay no taxes and shipping (have Prime).

Good prices for Diary of a Wimpy Kid (haven't seen this under $20 yet, I don't think) and She's Out of My League, but like MinLShaw, I am very hesitant to jump on anything unless it's an amazing deal due to getting burned from Black Friday deals in previous years.

So it is perfectly ok to post regular ads a week, sometimes two weeks in advance, but the post-Thanksgiving ad is off limits? What sense does that make?

Love that price on Expendables. Can't wait for Amazon to price match it.

I know what you're saying, but either way, you have Google, don't you? All the ads are out there with a simple search, no big deal

Here's the thing: Week by week, retailers aren't too concerned about those of us who frequent message boards for early ad information. In a given week, they're really only promoting a handful of things at modest discounts. If you want to go to Target just to buy Toy Story 3 on Blu-ray or price match Best Buy's price on The Dark Knight at Walmart, so be it. The average consumer in the average week isn't that concerned.

But with Black Friday, there are a ton of people who go shopping that otherwise don't go shopping and/or don't frequent these message boards. The discounts are steeper. And the danger is that once an ad is out there, a competitor has the chance to counter with a last minute, thunder-stealing deal of their own. That's why the retailers are so protective of their Black Friday ads.

Don't think about it as Black Friday being some kind of strange exception to the rule; be grateful that the other 51 weeks of the year they don't consider it worth the same effort.

Re: Bestbuy Blu-Ray Prices (November 21 - November 24)

Yes, I do, and already have a copy of the ad in question. But I was looking at it more from the point that this is the Bargains forum and every other weekly ad is posted, so why not this one? I'm sure there are a few members that don't give a crap about Black Friday as a whole but would still like to see the media prices for these dates.

Besides, if the ad isn't posted, how are we all going to bitch about how crappy the ad is?

I'll be picking up Zombieland for $12.99 as I have no intention of braving the Target BF crowds.

to my knowledge, nary a website has been sued or threatened with lawsuits by posting weekly ads. the same can't be said about posting a black friday ad.

CAG got subpoenaed by Circuit City for revealing the PS3's eventual price drop...that was the whole thing involving Speedy a few years back.

FYI, They started to write the ADs in Sept, they place all orders in Oct, and print the same day. The ADs do not go to the papers till a week or two before hand (Christmas ads only).

The other places. They know each other ads. If you look at them you will see for the most part about 80% of the items are the same.

When I work for the OC Register and in marketing. I would see this. Why I am on a Movie board. You have to have Movies, TVS, Computer(something), Stuff to ware (kids, and Adults), Toys (1 of the 5 top HOT ones). The rest is get you into the door (as everyone knows). Back some years ago (1992 or 3). I was at the main office and was looking at the Ads. In there was someone from BB, CC, and two other places. They where not looking at their ads.

I have to say I like what Wal-Mart does. For movies that is. They do not run out (in my city) and they have 20 titles each year from $2 on up. Not one POS title.

I think more to the post the owners got a email from the Marketing Dept and just did not wish to deal with them. This is fair to the board, but give them time. You will see the newspapers doing this. They are the real owners of the papers ads.

I haven't seen any moderators post anything this year about Black Friday being off limits. Unless they do, I say go for it. Don't let the wanna-be mods scare you off. I'm sure one of them will report your post and if the mods don't like it, they will delete it.

I'm hoping so, but I'm sure it'll at least be $18 again at some point in December. Sucks it looks like we aren't getting the sales we saw last year...

I know it's all worked out in advance, but they're still protective of having their thunder stolen. We'll come back to that...

I have to say I like what Wal-Mart does. For movies that is. They do not run out (in my city) and they have 20 titles each year from $2 on up. Not one POS title.
The quality of the movies is entirely subjective; I think it's fairer to say they regularly include a lot of recognizable, recent mainstream movies. When Lawrence of Arabia and The Seventh Seal show up, let me know. Like with their normal selection, there's often been an unhealthy ratio of Full Screen versions polluting the pool.

I think more to the post the owners got a email from the Marketing Dept and just did not wish to deal with them. This is fair to the board, but give them time. You will see the newspapers doing this. They are the real owners of the papers ads.
...And we're back to thunder-theft. From a marketing perspective, a Black Friday ad loses its gusto if leaked too early. Traditional buyers still devour the Sunday paper and sift through all the print ads. It wasn't until the Internet went mainstream that leaks became a problem. For instance, those who've had access to these ads and have generously shared them with us on this forum in advance previously had no way of getting that information to anyone except people they actually knew. Now? The whole world can find this information. And as consumers increasingly access the web for this kind of information, there's a greater risk that by the time those Sunday papers are on sale, no one will care because they'll have already lost their enthusiasm for the information they've already read.

It's ultimately inevitable, as older consumers are displaced by a more net-savvy generation of older consumers. (It's a given that younger consumers are already relying on the web for their information.) Eventually, the marketing department will have to join the 21st Century and make use of viral advertising instead of relying on print ads.
