Picked up so far: Last Emperor, Seven Samurai, Monterey box, Ride with the devil, House, Walkabout, Mystery Train (didn't see anyone picking this one up), Black Narcissus, Bottle Rocket, Darjeeling Ltd, Che, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Red Desert.
My local BN has the following BDs: Monsoon Wedding, Paths of Glory, Merry Xmas Mr Lawrence, Crumb, Magician, Secret of the grain, Xmas tale, Hunger, Vivre sa vie, Stagecoach, By brakhage, Last year at Marienbad, In the realm of the senses, Last metro, Days of Heaven, Breathless, Red shoes, Black orpheus, 8 1/2, M, Seventh seal and Third Man.
Any recommendations amongst those?

I'm leaning towards Seventh seal, Days of Heaven and Monsoon Wedding and considering Paths of Glory, but don't know how it is compared to some of his more mainstream movies. I also wanted Thin red line and Antichrist (and Broadcast news, Cronos and Videodrome once they come out), but unless they come in stock I will have to wait until next sale.

your B&N has THE THIRD MAN (criterion, not studiocanal)? if you don't pick that shit up immediately, for 20 (or 18, or 13) bucks, you're a damn fool. that disc AVERAGES 70 bucks, is long out of print, and kicks the sc disc square in the nuts.

also, buy M and Seventh Seal. yesterday.

Is the Third Man the Criterion version? If so I would pick that up for sure seeing as though it's oop. A friend of mine keeps trying to buy mine. If I didn't like it so much I'd consider it.

It is likely the SC version. I also saw this version as well and I think that some of the B&N employees are a bit confused with this as a couple have pointed it out to me as being part of the "Criterion" sale although it isn't the Criterion version.

I would echo The Third Man if for no other reason than those stated by others. You could easily toss it up for sale opened and get 2x-3x what you paid for it. I'm not the ebaying type and it's a good film nonetheless. My favorites on your list would be The Seventh Seal (which is essential and comes with a cool full-length documentary) and 8 1/2. I haven't met many people that don't like The Seventh Seal, but 8 1/2 is more of an acquired taste.

I really like Last Year at Marienbad, but I disagree with those who would recommend as a blind buy as I could understand if someone didn't like it.

My other favorites on your list would be Vivre Sa Vie, M, Stagecoach and Paths of Glory. Those final three are probably the more universally liked and; therefore, are "safer" as a blind buy. I like Vivre Sa Vie the most of those four titles, but it's Godard, so YMMV.

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale

I hated Last Year at Marienbad. It was just a boring movie to watch. In fact, it's the only film released by Criterion I so strongly disliked. I was disappointed by the Third Man but still enjoyed the film.

Everything else I've seen so far has been great. I'd highly recommend Monsoon Wedding, Paths of Glory, Crumb, The Magician, The Last Metro, Breathless, The Seventh Seal, etc.

If The Third Man is the Criterion edition I would honestly purchase it just to sell (or to keep if you truly want to have that edition over the Studio Canal one).

Of the other ones I mentioned, I would suggest The Last Metro more than any of the others -- mostly because Truffaut has become one of my favorite film-makers, I absolutely LOVED the film, and I don't see as many people recommending it. If you've seen The 400 Blows or any other Truffaut film then you have an idea of what his style is like and should have a pretty good idea of whether or not it will appeal to you (in my own opinion, of course).

Just picked up Black Narcissus and Crumb. I used one $5 coupon. I won't even dare ask to use more than one coupon at a time at my store. They already know me and I'm lucky they let me still use one.

I'd recommend Breathless over some of the others. It is Godard's best movie and is still fresh today.

I was looking for M and Breathless today but my store is becoming picked pretty thin the last few days. I hope they restock during the week. :)

I didn't think I was going to order anything, but then I went to BN and got:

House
The Darjeeling Limited
Modern Times
Seven Samurai
The Magician
Paths of Glory

And I have to disagree about Breathless. While it was Godard's debut, it's far from his best and I've never felt the need to own it on any format.

Actually the documentary on Seventh Seal is an edited version of a full length documentary.

Are people actually finding Modern Times in stores? I thought that it didn't come out until Tuesday. I'm waiting on it and Night of the Hunter.

My point only had to do with the idea that it was feature-length (I'm aware that I said full-length in my post...I thought saying feature-length might confuse others into thinking it was another "movie"). I wasn't insinuating that it is unedited, I was just alluding to the fact, that you can look at it as 2-for-1 as, at 83 minutes, this documentary goes beyond the typical 30ish-minute "extra" on a Criterion disc.

I'm only addressing this because I think your comment confuses the issue further. I would argue that the documentary is full-length because the "scenes" from the documentary were pulled from a series of 3, 1-hour episodes that aired on SVT. This may seem like semantics, but you make it sound like there was a single documentary out there and this is an edit of that documentary. That's certainly up for argument, but the documentary film titled, Bergman Island has only appeared at this length.

Anyone curious about production, Marie Nyrerod wrote an interesting article on the creation of the original episodes and on the creation of the documentary on Criterion's website titled, "Bergman and I." It's good reading for anyone interested in Bergman's films and/or the documentary itself.

I do find Breathless to be his best as I stated above. For me it is his best because it is his most entertaining film. I know others may find his more philosophical fims to be his best. I like the pure entertainment of Breathless.

For a great companion piece, and some excellent nudity, you can get the Richard Gere version of Breathless for around 4.00 dollars with tax at BN.COM with the 25 percent coupon online.

It's very watchable and it's the type of film that is moved by the music throughout. I don't know if it's a film for everyone (or that one would automatically love), but I don't think it's one of those "quirky" titles that can either garner a 5-star or 1-star depending on taste (Godard, I'm looking at you).

I, myself, have been trying to decide if I should upgrade my single-disc DVD with the Blu-ray, but there are so many titles that I still don't own that I want, so I'll probably hold off for now.

I watched the Blu Ray the other day and was not really impressed at all. It felt kind of silly and "sitcommy" - characters are all one-note (the female lead borders on zero notes) and react oddly to each other, e.g., a character will get spurned, furrow her brow, then within seconds will run off to dance and laugh as if nothing had happened. There is a particularly ridiculous moment near the climax of the film, but I don't want to get into spoilers (it involves advice from an old man, for those who've seen it). There are also some jarring shifts in tone that seem to derive from the film's attempt to shoehorn the source myth's tragic plot elements into the context of a joyful dance movie. On the plus side, the music is often excellent, the dancing really fun, and the film seems like an interesting historical document given the timing of its release. But overall, I personally wouldn't recommend it.
