FYI - if anyone lives in the Cleveland/Akron area and needs a copy of The Thin Red Line, the Fairlawn store had it on one of the standalone shelves.

Maybe I should go ahead and try Red Desert. I seem to always pick up on every trip to BN but always put it down.

And by no means am I done with this sale.

Picked up the following today;
- House/Hausu

Still not quite done. I think I lucked out extremely well on The Thin Red Line and Seven Samurai BDs. I guess I'll pre-order online for Night of the Hunter and Modern Times. Hopefully B&N doesn't cancel the order and screw me over. May also squeeze in 8 1/2 and Repulsion. I think I can hold off again on The Seventh Seal and on Breathless. All of which are things left on my list to get. I just love this sale. My collection was only 3 BDs (from the last sale - The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, M) before this, now its 8. What a glorious addiction.

I would recommend Breathless over Repulsion if you're doing blind buys. All the titles you mentioned are film classics. But, some are more enjoyable than others. Breathless is a landmark film and a joy to watch.

Agreed 100%

I somewhat reluctantly picked up Breathless on this current sale. I wasn't as impressed with the film as so many others when I watched it about a year ago. The blu-ray looks fantastic, and I'm gaining a little more appreciation for this title. I do wish it had a commentary track (surprising considering how important Criterion feels this title to be). --peter

There's a very good commentary track on the old Fox Lorber disc, I believe it's the one Netflix still carries.

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions everybody, it was really helpful. Unfortunately, I got denied the $5 off coupon, because in the fine print it says "For memberships purchased between August XX - December XX". Never saw that myself. Damn.

Re: Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale

I went pretty nuts in the last sale so I'm trying to keep it low key this sale. Trying to keep it at:

Darjeeling Limited
House
Modern Times
Night of the Hunter
Paths of Glory
Seven Samurai
Thin Red Line

I really want the Von Sternberg set but nobody has it and I don't particularly want to order online, so that may have to wait until the next sale. I'm torn though.

Just try again, maybe a different store/employee. I've used at least 50 of these coupons throughout the past year or so; in places ranging from at least ten different stores around Dallas, TX, three stores in Hawaii, and now three different stores in Manhattan. I've almost been denied for tons of reasons, but that has never been one of them.

I'm getting to the party late, and I'm seeing all of these respected films that I've never seen before. Color me overwhelmed! Maybe I'll get lucky and the my local store won't have many to choose from, thus helping me make my decision.

tasog37,
specifically, how were the stores in/around Dallas? Any specific stores that seemed to be better about the coupons than others? Can you remember any specific employees to avoid?

I just tried this and it does not work online for any of the criterions.

I had that one time this sale from the local store I consider to be the worst around for problems, The Grove. The person was a manager, but he eventually relented and allowed me to purchase the title with the coupon. I haven't been back there this sale. 99% of my problems around coupons stem from this store and it's not worth the wasted time and frustration, because if they deny me I'll walk out with nothing. I know I can go elsewhere without the problems.

No coupons allowed online for the criterions during the sale.

So far I've only been to the Plano store, and the girl there has been very accommodating, if ill-informed. Tomorrow I'm gonna try the Northwest Hwy store, wish me luck!

The only store I ever had any problems with in Dallas was Lincoln Park (7700 West Northwest Hwy. Ste. 300), a ton of arguing with two employees/a manager but they simply wouldn't take a $5 coupon on a $30 msrp title. In their estimation, "the sale price is the official price, therefore it is below $20." which doesn't make much sense, but I didn't make a big fuss out of it. That's the only coupon I've ever been turned down on and those are obviously much tougher to argue. You should be able to get away with a single $5 off coupon at a time, but this location is way fussier than most. It's the best selection outside of the Hurst store I mention later in this post though.

The Preston/Royal location is alright. Not a huge selection though. The Prestonwood location (5301 Beltline Road Suite 118) was a great find though. Pretty decent selection. I was with a friend the second time I went there and only had one coupon, so the employee scanned that single coupon five or six times so we could both grab everything we wanted (this was her idea, I would never have pushed for it). I definitely have not had that happen any other time!

I don't where around Dallas you'll be, but there's a store in Hurst that has a huge selection. I went in three separate times over the course of the last sale and every time the employees were very cool/took multiple coupons without blinking. I also had very good luck across a few visits to a location in Arlington by the Parks Mall. I ended up getting one of the employees numbers (lol) and ended up finishing off the sale at that one, as she and her friends didn't care and would take as many coupons as I could print.

There are stores in both Las Colinas and Lewisville. I had great luck at both, but be prepared to do a bit of convincing. I also went by a store in Ft. Worth a few times, which I had no problems with.

It helps to be well-informed. As Zombeaner said, employees are often misinformed. I had a guy try to convince me that not all the titles were 50% off, just the ones they had put stickers on. I had another try to tell me the sale didn't work online. Just be nice/understand the coupon and it should be smooth sailing.

Hit me up if you have any more questions! Happy to help.

Last fall I hit the Lincoln Park store late in the evening and there was a girl there who was awesome and took all of my coupons. I haven't been there since, though. I'm trying to be judicious in my coupon use to as not to appear to be abusing anything.

I agree it is a landmark film, but I really struggle to get through it. That long scene in the middle seems to go on forever.

tasog37,
Wow! Thanks for all the info. I'll be in the Fort Worth area, so I'll be going to Hulen and University for sure. Arlington is a bit further, but they seemed to have a better selection than the others when I was there for the first sale. That said, I really want to make it out to the Hurst store. It looks like it's between the airport and my destination in Fort Worth, so it might not be too hard to drop by there. :D

Thanks again!

Yeah it's definitely the luck of the draw most of the time. I definitely went to that store four-ish times for various things; got completely turned away that one time and got one coupon through each of the other times. Just getting one coupon through was a headache each time though, so I just gave up on that store. But yeah, very much depends on the employee/their mood that day!

Edit: No problem! Happy to help. And yeah, from the airport the Hurst store is right off of the highway. You have to exit, go under the highway, then drive through the mall parking lot to get it; it's a bit confusing, there's a Best Buy right next to it, in case that helps! There's probably a faster way I just never found it, haha.

I think they are correct here. If you are talking about a $30 title, the sale price is $15, which would negate use of the $5 coupon. If you were talking about a $40 title (like a Blu-ray), then you would have a case. (Some folks have met with the $19.99 vs. $20 argument, which is total BS.)
