... unless a) you're keen on instant gratification, and b) you're a Reward Zone member, both of which are worth the price of tax.

How is getting a $5 "Reward" for spending $250 worth it? $250 with a 5% sales tax (which is a VERY lowball guess, usually its between 6-8) is $12.50 in tax you had to spend.

Spend $250 at Amazon- DONT pay the $12.50
Spend $250 at Best Buy- Spend $12.50 at least, but get $5.

Still getting the shaft, but if you're keen on instant gratification, more power to ya I suppose..

People who live in a state that has an Amazon also have to pay taxes.

And between the two -- both having it in your hand immediately and getting some money back -- I imagine paying the $.50-.80 extra (tax percent) is worth it, right?

And people in pretty much every other state have to pay the tax later when they file.

Taxes should never be mentioned here at DVDTalk. It's silly to do so.

Yeah...it better be a damn good deal for me to go to BB to get a BD. So far..Amazon has hit all the films I wanted for $9.99 out of that Horror BD sale. Fuck BB.

That really is true for me. No more Tower, no more DD, Best Buy only when they get an exclusive... I just keep my wishlist up to date on Amazon and fire away when they hit the right numbers... easy.

As someone that doesn't have to pay tax on purchases at Amazon, it's always relevant to me and under consideration when comparing Amazon to other stores. I think dismissing it when it saves a buck or two is silly, even though it doesn't help everyone.

Does that mean they have to pay taxes in Brazil? :-)

Seriously, though, Amazon doesn't charge sales tax in my state and they have a giant distribution hub nearby (meaning I usually get my Prime stuff the next day). I assume, then, that Amazon has store fronts that sell stuff in some states and that states with only a distribution hub don't charge sales tax?

Agreed. Shipping is also an issue. Some places still don't offer it all the time at any cost. I doubt Best Buy does other than their special events. Shame too. They're supposedly going to have a B2G1 on games the week of the 24th, but shipping and tax suck the fun right out of it.

I ordered my Evil Dead on the 6th, and it's still yet to ship. Knowing me, I'll probably get stuck with the one discer.

That's not too far off, although there are some additional subtleties. Amazon of course would love to not charge tax anywhere, but by law they have to collect tax in any state where they have a selling presence. What this means has been the subject of debate. New York, for example, made a legal argument in 2008 that having affiliates in the state was enough to create a selling presence. This allowed New York to start collecting tax on Amazon purchases to fill its budget gap. More on that here:

I just received mine, and it's the 2-disc edition, so (perhaps) there's hope for you yet. :)

They don't sell it like that. This "part one" is only 1 disc of the 6 disc set. I think it's just a sampler kind of deal to get you interested in dropping the $70 on the full set.

Band of Brothers looks like a good deal, how does it compare to previous deals?
