re: Newbury Comics B&M - BOGO - 2/25 Only! (DEAD)

No fail for me...just raided the Burlington, MA location:

Planet Terror (19.99)
Poltergeist (17.99) - FREE

Serenity (17.99)
Fight Club (17.99) - FREE

Men in Black (15.99)
Hunt for Red October (14.99) - FREE

Bourne Supremacy (14.99)
Blue Man Group (7.99) - FREE

Ended up getting 8 titles for $73.27 after tax...not too shabby!

They had a ton of other stuff, but nothing I wanted...

Picked up a couple things in the Salem NH store:

Groundhog Day ($15.99 -> $8.00)
The Mummy ($15.99 -> $8.00)
True Blood Season 1 ($24.99 -> $12.49)
True Blood Season 1 ($24.99 -> $12.49) (yes, I bought two copies)

Not earth-shattering, but definitely worth stopping by.

Idiots at the Amherst store. Brought 4 titles to the counter - 2 for $8 and 2 for $12 - and asked to do two transactions, but was told no. So, I asked if I buy 2 now, go out, come back in and then buy the other 2 that's ok, but was told no. So, I just left with the 2 cheapest ones.

That sucks.

I too was worried about how they were going to match up the titles with price differences and I wanted to maximize my savings. The guy at the register (Newton store) told me not to worry about it and proceeded to ring them in at the highest value in descending order - 1 in and the next free. No complaints here.

My tally:

District 9 - $9
Sky Crawlers - $9
Miami Vice - $8
Final Fantasy: Advent Children - $9
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - $7
Die Hard - $8

Would have bought more but a lot of stuff was in poor condition. Hit up Newton, Norwood and Natick.

A good way to avoid this is to initially pay for 2 items (in your case, two $12 items), and then after they've completed the transaction and about to hand you your bag, innocently ask if the sale is all weekend or something. I often do that, so when they say that today is the only day, I ask if I can take another minute to look around, grab my other items, and pay for those (in your case, the other two $8s).

Most stores don't advertise the deal too well throughout the store, so it's easy to play dumb.

re: Newbury Comics B&M - BOGO - 2/25 Only! (DEAD)

What are you guys talking about? You were allowed to buy 10 titles (5 paid, 5 free). No trickery was needed!

I hit up the North Attleboro Store and got:

X-Men Trilogy $49.99 -> $25 = $8.33/movie
Godfather Trilogy ($49.99) -> $25 = $8.33 / movie

Lost: Season 3* $49.99 -> $25
Watchmen: Ultimate Cut ($25.99) -> $25

Pan's Labyrinth $14.99 -> $7.50
Superbad ($13.99) -> $7.50

Quantum Of Solace $11.99 -> $6
The Fugitive ($9.99) -> $6

Then I hit up the Norwood (or is it Walpole) one - which I had never been to before and is AMAZING! Easily double the size of any other Newbury Comics I had ever been in. Sadly by then all the good blu rays had been picked over, but I did pick up two DVDs:

Pirates Of The Carribean 3 2-disc version $9.99 -> $5
Indiana Jones 4 2-disc version ($9.99) -> $5

I really wish I had hit the store as soon as they opened and gone to work late - I'll definitely do that next time. The North Attleboro store was very crowded with people huddled around the small Blu-Ray section. I bet if I had gotten there earlier I would have been able to find some stuff I really wanted - Blade Runner (shiny version), Bourne Trilogy, Spider-Man Trilogy, Iron Man, Sin City)

* I only picked up Lost Season 3 because the used copy had the slipcover. I already own a new copy of the set I got from Amazon for the $109 deal. I'll sell my used set for probably $40 essentially making Watchmen Ultimate Cut cost $10

I don't think sotra was referring to the number of titles they would let him buy, but rather how he would have preferred the discount to stack up ($20 off, rather than $16)

re: Newbury Comics B&M - BOGO - 2/25 Only! (DEAD)

But that doesn't make any sense. He had two $8 titles and two $12 titles. The way they would ring it up would be:

Title 1 $12
Title 2 ($12)

Title 3 $8
Title 4 ($8)

For a grand total of $20 for the two titles. The only other possible way to ring it up would end up costing you more:

Title 1 $12
Title 2 ($8)

Title 3 $12
Title 4 ($8)

For a grand total of $24 for 4 titles. So why would you want to do that?

Correct this would be the favorable way to do it, but if you present all 4 titles at once, the system will remove the 2 $8 titles.

He didn't, that is why he asked for (and was denied) two seperate transactions, to which I offered my experience with doing simultaneous transactions.

The 3 different stores/cashiers I dealt with specifically arranged the discs to maximize the discount...

/\ In one transaction? I assumed that the system always removes the cheapest items?

At the Salem NH location, the cashier rang them in order of price. So my two $24.99 titles were rung in first, and then he scanned the barcode that's set up at the register, which took $24.99 off. Then he did my two $15.99 titles and scanned the barcode again, taking off $15.99.

I shocked that you had any issues buying more than one pairing. The Newbury employees are usually great at all the stores I shop at (Salem NH, Peabody, Burlington, Nashua and Manchester).

/\ Ah, that explains it then. Every cashier I've ever had has scanned the coupon after all the items. I'll try what you suggested next time this rolls around, thanks!

Ditto. They did it properly in both Newbury Comics locations I went to.
