My player will only play DVDs 1 and 3 properly. It displays "no disk" for all the others except the Companion which it start to play and then freezes 23 seconds into the DVD. My player is an Afreey LD-2060 set to either bypass region code checking or set to region 2. Has anyone else had problems with this box set?

Thanks,
Gary

Hey Gary,

You might want to put this in the DVDtalk forum instead of this one. It gets more traffic than this forum.

Yup, we've experienced problems with the set on our OEM/Amoisonic player which is Region and Macrovision-free from the factory. All the discs worked except for the third one. On branded Pioneer and Sony units however, playback was flawless.

Interestingly enough, the Amoisonic player also had some problems with Carlton's Prisoner set. All the discs played, but dark areas in the picture were excessively pixelated for some strange reason. Playback on the Pioneer and Sony units showed some posterization in dark areas, but no ugly blocks.

Conclusion? Guess you get what you pay for.

Anali,

Thanks for your reply.

Being in Canada, finding a DVD player that plays anything other than R1 is very difficult. I don't even know anyone else in my area that could test the disks for me. Other than buying a modified branded player, the Afreey was the only player I found where the region could be set from the player's setup.

Since I bought the Afreey specifically to play non-R1 DVDs, I didn't/don't want to make a big investment in DVDs until I know I can play them. I thought I was safe when I didn't (and haven't) had any problems with my first R2 DVD: Black Adder series I.

I'm sorry to hear about you problem with the Prisoner boxset because it too is on my wish list. So if I may not be able to play it either, my investment in the Afreey is pretty much wasted.

What region are your Pioneer and Sony units?

Checked with my friend about the Sony and Pioneer DVD units we tested the Thunderbirds set on -- apparently, they were region-free as well. Turns out that distributors here in Asia (particularly in Southeast Asia) tend to modify players before releasing them to the retail market. Hong Kong, for example, sells retail DVDs from Regions 1,2 and 3 which would be ridiculous unless region-free players were readily available.

Just for kicks, I went to a nearby appliance store here in Manila and asked about the Phillips players. True enough, I was told that they were 'factory-modified' to play all regions. Hmmm...

Following is a list of discs that I've had problems with:
1. Thunderbirds boxed set / disc 3 'no disc' error
2. Prisoner boxed set / pixelation during 'dark' scenes
3. Giant Robo boxed set / disc 2 'no disc' error
4. Indochine / 'no disc' error
5. Lock, Stock, and 2 Smoking Barrels / skips certain parts

Hmmm indeed. The problem doesn't make any sense. Just another of life's little mysteries I guess.
